It is only necessary on glass/fiber media. All the filters that have glass/fiber media.... have wire backing.

Great filter-but as mentioned before M1 and this filter are overkill for 3K miles.
QSGB and a Puro Classic will get you there just as well-until you fix the coolant leak. It's not just a coolant leak, it will negatively effect internal engine wear. Cheaper to get it fixed now, unless the car is a beater

have we ever seen a Fram filter fail the way we've seen others like Puro & SuperTech fail. I think not
We've seen several instances of blown through paper elements on the other brands. Maybe the engineered media in the Fram, keeps the pleat/endcap interface flexible enough to avoid a tear

Seriously? Other than ZO's Classic recently, and one other very minor tear at the glue from a Subaru where the exhaust/exhaust manifold encircles the filter, I've seen way more unexplained orange cans in very rough/questionable shape posted here. I won't use the term failed.

For me though it's more about price for construction. An orange can at $1.50-$2.00 for the fiber endcap construction would be what they are worth. But, using average Wally price at ~$4+, overpriced. The extra goes to Frams extensive advertising and buying shelf space to dominate stores like Walmart.

When I start seeing premium canister extended performance filters like M!, RP, K&N, Amsoil, BoschD+ and others, made with fiber endcaps, the I 'might' feel differently. Don't think that's going to happen any time soon though.

I've used them and my dad is using one currently. I like my M1's when I can get them on sale but the extended guards are great filters that do their job.

... but kind of costly for only a 3K OCI.
So is M1 High mileage ,seems money is no object. IMO both oil and filter choices are the wrong application for the job showing a lack of understanding of oil and filters.
