Not "over" thinking... thinking flat wrong.

lots of little slits ("louvers") = same surface area as few bigger holes.

Taken to one extreme (big holes) you have E-core and people worry about the filter pushing through the holes for lack of support. Taken to the other extreme, you have fine wire mesh.
