Bought a suburban a couple of months ago. Changed the oil as soon as I got it. Oil was unknown but had a recent looking fram ultra on it. Don't know how long either was in it. Cut open the fram today and saw lots of grit in the bottom of the pleats and in the can. Filter looked great.
When I changed it I used ultra 0w-40 and a Quaker state filter. I had planned on running it for 5k but I had pulled the valve covers to replace the gaskets and saw it was fairly varnished up but no sludge. After seeing the grit in the lsat filter I changed it today with valvoline white bottle sm 10w-40 and a super wix filter. The ultra had about 3k on it. I think I will do 2.5k changes for a little while
The qs had some grit and chunks in it.
Ps the Quaker state had louvers and the motor didn't die.
