Purchased a 6-pack from Walmart and 2 of the 6 have flash/burr from the stamping on the end cap. Looks like the die was dull or didn't make a full depth hit.

ugh. and Double UGH.

Why cant someone make a decent shell/baseplate like an OEM hyundai filter.
but use top quality antidrainback, bypass spring, and filter media.
its 2024 sheesh :(

Hole Punches on the stamping die used here were dull or fired up from lack of lube. Stamping sheet steel is hot & messy because the stamping lube is sprayed everywhere to flush away debris and keep things cool.

Poor quality finish. Not the first time I've seen it. It's up to the people that are being paid to prevent this stuff from ever reaching the consumer.

Figured I'd let FRAM know about the bad stamping on these two. After the customer service representative got the part number from me I was advised to exchange these two filters. He also said they would send a report to have an "engineer" review the stamping process at this machine. It was also pointed out there were not any pre-existing reports on this SKU right now, so that I'm the first to report anything. He made it sound like they have some ability to track batches, but there isn't anything on the filter to indicate the batch.

Walmart.com return delivery was free, so we'll see if the replacements look better.

I asked him if I should, but he was of the mindset we shouldn't have to. Guess there is a perk of buying these in store, pre inspection.
You did the right thing for sure. Mine was in the threads and I was so nervous some may have fell into the filter. I inspect everything before purchase now.

They should be able to track it by the date code on the filter's can.

Why pay someone to tell you to scrap product when most of the failures aren't likely to cause an issue and are tough to prove?Poor quality finish. Not the first time I've seen it. It's up to the people that are being paid to prevent this stuff from ever reaching the consumer.
Unfortunately they were all terminated as a cost savings measure. Paying someone a salary to then be told that you're doing a crap job and need to scrap products, maintain equipment, and improve practices? How horrifying.

Just think of the savings. Who cares if some defects get through? Most of them won't cause a problem, and of those only a tiny fraction will ever be traced back to the filter.

Not sure, CS rep told me there wasn't anything on the filter to determine it.
You said you bought these as a 6-pack from Walmart. I'm thinking it was a 3rd party (not Walmart directly) selling through Walmart on-line?

All the Ultras posted here in this forum have a date code, so something is up.

Directly from Walmart. I offered to read any codes off the filter, but the CS rep stated there wouldn't be anything printed on the filter they can use to track back to a batch.

I'd think if Fram had the date code they could certainly trace the filter back to a lot or batch, probably even the production line it was made on. Fram is being inept it seems to me.

I wasn't going to challenge FRAM on their own process, so these are now returned.

Can’t help thinking these filters are “seconds” with visible defects, that should have been scrapped & weren’t supposed to be sold. That’s why there’s no date code. Hard to believe even First Brands would have let those out!
