Hi there ..

As we all know Fram X2 filters are an old filters and are no longer available by Fram's.
These are similar to Ultra filters , but still i need to know what is the difference between them in terms of construction, filteration ..etc.

Thank you.

Mr. Zone,
I am the tech guy at FRAM. The X2 is really the first gen version of what is now called Ultra. The construction has always been the same, pleated metal screen with synthetic media wrapped around it. Steel end caps with silicone adv. X2 was 96% efficiency@20 microns, was a 7500 mile OCI filter. It then became Extended Guard and had two layers of synthetic media and went to 97.9% efficiency@20 microns and 10k OCI's. With Ultra, the media was again improved for 99% efficiency and an improvement in capacity to go to 15k OCI's.

Motorking .. Thank you.
ok i just need to know when did Fram exactly stop making the X2's ?!!
cuz there is still an old stock in some stores out there n i'm just trying to figure out how old are these kept there ? if too old , do u recommend me getting them ? Thank you.

Maybe MotorKing could give us the date code "decoder ring" for FRAM filters. I'm assuming there is a manufactured date code on the can someplace.

^ Motorking - if you're lucky - will show up only one time in your thread n then he disappears lol.

All due respect Dead Zone but that appears to be a little condescending. If not I apologize. MotorKing might have more pressing things to do than monitor this thread all day long. If he is who I think he is, he spends a fair amount of time on different forums trying to answer questions as to the quality, or perceived lack thereof, of Fram products. Given the hate for Fram that permeates forums like these it can't be a pleasant task at times. I give him credit for the courage to at least try while keeping a pleasant, calm demeanor in the process. He tried to answer a question in this thread and you came back with what appeared to be a caustic post.

Since the weather has been atrocious where I'm at I've spent a lot of time on the net reading different product reviews and auto related forums to pass the time. I happened upon a F150 forum where a man was fighting Ford over engine problems that some tried to attribute to a Fram Filter. The thread went on for 19 pages at my last count and through the first roughly fifteen pages MotorKing went out of his way, multiple times, to help this gentleman with any thing at his disposal with the backing of Fram. The Fram hate was so strong by several individuals on that sight that he just gave up and I didn't blame him. If I read the thread correctly at the end, the engine problem had nothing to do with anything filter related. If others have read the same forum thread and the conclusion was different, please let me know.

No, I don't work for Fram. But I have used Fram in the past and I've had no problems what-so-ever and will probably use them in the future until convinced otherwise. I've just seen this man ripped to shreds by haters of Fram products. To posters in general, I get it, you don't like Fram. Maybe you had a bad experience with a Fram product and you're not happy or maybe you don't like what you see from a quality perspective in a Fram product. That's OK. To each his own. But why do people have to take it to a personal level?

We've got some members here to with some fram hate as well, which I find absurd. In fact fram makes great products,as good as and better than the brands they compete against.
I think the orange can is over priced for what it is but it's not a bad filter. I've cut open countless frams and I've yet to find any defects or problems with the construction and I routinely run my filter double what the manufacturer recommends so if there was going to be an issue I'm sure I'd have seen it.
Canadian tire rebrands tough guards here, and the filters are typically half the price for a decent filter.

wow .. Take it easy guys, i have nothing against Motorking n i was jst kiddin hehe

Actually I thought your comments were spot on, I noticed he's rarely on and you are lucky to get one post in a thread but at least it's informative and he's an asset of information.

FRAM filters, including the much maligned OCD, have proved to be quite serviceable over the years.

FRAM builds oil filters, not the space shuttle.

But FRAM has had a documented screw up or two and a lot of anecdotal complaints not unlike Pennzoil and their paraffinic crude based "wax oil."

I'm encouraged with the continued development of the TG and Ultra filters.

Mr. Zone,
Sorry I didnt get back to you right away. I still havent figured out how to get an email notice when there is a follow up question. I have used to post my direct email address in this forum but the mod stopped that. My cell number is 248-808-4551 and email is [email protected]. Feel free to contact me with filter or coolant questions at any time. On to your question- X2 is pretty old. I will need to wait until tomorrow to get exact dates but I do know they were out of production in 2007 when I came back to working for FRAM from another one of our brands. That said, are they still good to use? Depends. They had a pretty snazzy package, more like a can than a box with a plastic lid on top. Our engineers have said to me more than once that as long as a filter is kept in a clean and low humidity place, they really have an exceptionally long shelf life. I will send an email to an engineer to find out when they went out of production and how to decipher the date code. I will get back to you as soon as I can but I am working at CARQUEST show right now and heading directly to an ORY show and will not be back to my office until next thursday. Please be patient, its hard to post in forums with an Iphone. I will let you know what I find out.

+1 - I am not a "loyal" Fram user (though there is an Ultra on my FX4 right now), but this is practically unheard of these days to have a CSR posting directly into a forum like this and providing direct contact information.

2010_FX4,

After I read several comment sections and threads, I was so PO'ed at the way they treated Jay, haters are going to hate, I sent him an e-mail. He was kind enough to respond back to me. I have a tremendous amount of respect for someone who takes the abuse he does as he keeps on trying to help people. He's has been nothing but professional, and a real gentleman, in any thread I have read with him involved. I appreciate that in a person. Thanks Jay.

Ok boys, thanks for your patience.
date code is read like this-
located On the side it will be printed horizontally starting with a Alfa then 5 digits sample would be A32471 A=Plant 3=year=247 Julian date 1= shift
so this one would be Greenville Oh, 2003 or 2013, Aug 29th, first

Next up, no expiration date but we require any legit FRAM distributor to return or destroy any stock more than 7 yrs old.

Last- The X2 ceased production early 2006 and was replaced by Extended Guard, which is now Ultra.
Please let me know if I can answer any further questions, I am working at a trade show for the next week so email is the best way to reach me [email protected]

I do have a favor to ask. Please make an effort to stop referring to ExtraGuard filters as OCOD. There are 3500 people working in plants in ohio and illinois making 200 million of these filters a year. If it was indeed a OCOD, how on earth could we even stay in business? Just asking a favor here.

Fair enough! I'm guilty of doing this myself and I like Frams but I'll do my part to honor your request. You make a good point no doubt, and it's been hashed over here and elsewhere a thousand times but I don't expect any real change. Internet hysteria and ignorance mostly IMO but you're right, there are real Americans making an honest living behind those orange cans we need to remember that in a world full of Chinese junk.

Does this data code format work on all Fram filters?
