Not so bad, not so good.

This is the full synthetic Fram filter with the metal screen backing for the filter media. $10 at Walmart.

According to the ISO 4406 Cleanliness code your ISO code should read: ISO Code 17/15 not 17/13.

A cleanliness "goal" for a diesel engine is "about" 16/14 (per newer standard).

So, for an expensive filter.....??? Make your own conclusions. Maybe the sample was tainted? How was your sample technique? Keep in mind I have yet to do a used oil analysis sample, but I've read "how to's" in taking a clean sample.

My error. I was reading 5 micron/10 micron instead of 5 micron/15 micron so the 17/13 IS correct (albeit on the edge of the 13 range..amost 14). Sorry about that.

I wonder if there is any data re: and ISO cleanliness "goal" for a gasoline engine. Filter guy?

Nope..

You can email an OEM and ask if they have a recommended cleanliness level.

It would be interesting to see their responce.

I am carefull to get a good sample. Here is how it went.

-Drove car around for about 20min to get it warmed up.
-Waited about 20-30 min for it to cool down a bit.
-Removed drain plug and let it drain for a few seconds.
-Put sample container in stream to collect sample.
-Filled to brim, it overflowed, hot oil burning my hands, screwed cap on, dropped bottle and quickly grabbed rag to wipe off hot oil.
-Wiped oil off of exterior of bottle.
-Placed in mailing container and sent it to Blackstone.

Thanks Winston. Looks like good "clean technique" to me. That is, except for the "hot oil burning my hands" part. OUCH!
