Sounds about right but is that an educated guess on your part or have you seen that figure quoted somewhere based on testing?

That has been debated a few times here. Purolator's website is pretty vague on just how long of an OCI their filters are rated for.


You're right. I was quoting the new syn filter as it turns out... sorry for the error.

I have run a P1 10K but when I go back into my P1 file, which has all the info I have on it, there really isn't anything beyond a 3000 mile, 3 month interval listed (yes, it's on the current P1 page at Puro).


I think Purolator is ultra conservative on their filter OCI info. I have no doubt that a Classic or PureOne could go 10K miles if the engine is pretty clean and the driving schedule is not severe.

Purolator's website actually says:
"Purolator PureONE oil filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles or 3 months depending on the driving conditions - or unless otherwise specified by the vehicle's manufacturer."

That leaves it pretty wide open to what the user deems an adequate OCI. At the very least, Purolator is saying follow your manufacture's OCI recommendations.

My guess is it has to do with the media. Still, 99% @ 25 microns is pretty good.
 
So how do you know how many grams of dirt your filter will hold for example I have run P1 20195 on my truck where can I find out how much it will hold? Not that it really matters I guess but just wondering?
 
I had related discussions with Fram and Puralator lately. Let me know what you guys think. I originally contacted them since I'm trying to decide which to use on my 370z. I currenttly use the PureOne (PL14610) but it is rated (on the box) at 40 micron instead of 20 like the rest of the PureOne line. I wondered if the new Fram Ultra might be better for this small filter.

I called Fram and they said the XG6607 is rated 99% at 20 micron. Then I emailed Puralator to confirm the efficiency of 99.9% at 40 micron for the PureOne PL14610, and see what the new Puro Synthetic rating is. Here is that conversation:

Me:Hello. I've been a longtime user of your PureONE oil filters and had a couple questions regarding them and the new Synthetic oil filter.
The PL14610 and PL14612 are the only filters in that product line that have filtering efficiency @ 40 micron. I'm sure it has been tested at 20 micron also, could you share the result?
The other questions is regarding equivalent models in the new Synthetic filter (I can't find exact model number) to the two PureONEs I just mentioned. What is the 20 micron efficiency for these?

James at Puro: Thank you for your inquiry. Both PureOne and Purolator Synthetic have a micron rating of 20. PureOne has a 99.9% efficiency rating, while Purolator Synthetic is 99% efficient

Me: Thanks for the quick reply, and taking the time to answer. One question though: the PL14610/14612 are the only PureOne oil filters NOT rated at 20, but at 40 micron. At least according to the box I have. They are very small filters. Are you sure they are rated at 99.9% at 20 micron? They probably aren't 99.9% efficient at both 20 and 40 micron? Same question would apply to the equivalent Synthetic filter (which I can't find the part number for for my Nissan 370Z

Either James @ Purolator is mistaken, or Purolator has changed their tune.

If James is correct, then Purolator better change the text on the box then ... and maybe they will. Have to look at new stock and see.

Also, there are two other small filters besides the 14610/14612 that had the "99.9% @ 40 microns" text on the box. Don't recall off hand which ones, but they are also very small in size.

Those would be the SAE-threaded equivalents of the PL14610/PL14612 filters. I don't remember their numbers either.

That is my guess, 5-6 grams of debris is a lot.

Honda is recommending their tiny oil filter changed on second oil change for most engines, with OCI of up to 8-10k miles. Honda oil filters is so small its capacity is probably less than 10 grams.
