Yep, the Extended Guard was very good but not up to the standard of the Ultra. The Ultra has as second layer of media, greater capacity and a higher filtering efficiency at 99%. The Extended Guard was advertised at 97%.
When it was first introduced the Extended Guard had "Protection for up to 7,500 miles!" across the box. That was a lot at the time. Later it was bumped to 10k and like Z said the Ultra is now rated for 15k although I'd bet almost none of them get used for that long.
Here's the kicker, Fram used the exact same designation numbers for the Ultra when it came out as the Extended Guards had used. So technically RA is not wrong to give you the Extended Guard, it's just old stock by one point of view. But if you thought you were getting an Ultra, you didn't really, I imagine they'd exchange it for you if you're not satisfied.
