Fram ultra extreme cold extended filter interval

It's worth a check. They never advertise filter specials, but I've never really compared their filter prices to other places. They did want too much for a Bosch for my G37, and it had to be special ordered, which is odd, because it's also a very common agricultural filter, and this is Saskatchewan, after all.

I've never had the incentive to compare the Wix pricing from my suppliers versus Napa Gold pricing, since I get the shop rate for Wix anyhow. But, it may be a very viable alternative to Canadian Tire and Walmart, especially if someone wants a decent filter without having to buy an M1 or Fram Ultra.

If Canadian shoppers showed Canadian Tire the loyalty they deserve, each and every one of them would be closed up within a week.

They love to spike the price and thats why they get what they deserved.

If CT really cared, they wouldn't be spiking prices and lower them to regular price in weekly sales.

Yep, off topic, but that's what gets me so miffed at CT. For most products, you simply cannot choose to shop there. I can't decide that I need motor oil and a filter with a predetermined choice in mind and just walk in and buy it, unless I really don't care about the price in the least. If I want a Fram Ultra and PP, and there isn't a sale, the odds are I'm going to have $70 worth of stuff in my hand between a jug and a filter, if not on sale. If on sale, it's closer to half that. The same goes for most tools.

Sure, they have some nice specials, when the product is on special. They go absolutely nuts, though, with a weekly 30 page flyer. But, you just don't go to CT if you need something in a hurry, unless your majorly stuck. And, it's not like their hours are so convenient to make up for this, either.

I just use my corporate pricing at a few shops in town here, and purchase my oil from the distributor. Peavey Mart has Hastings, too, at a much cheaper price than anything Walmart or CT sell, at least for comparable quality.

regarding CT, there are very rare exceptions where the regular pricing isn't bad.

One is house-brand 10w30 semi-syn HDEO (CJ-4/SM), 22.99 for 5 liters. Sometimes goes on sale for 18.99

Another is OCOD (disguised as Motomaster) for 5.50 or so.

Well, the specials are still good, when they're on. Instead of having an Ultra special every two or three weeks, they could just leave the price alone, at that lower amount.

Last special I saw was $11 due to weak loonie.

I thought of running the OEM for 12k km which is rated for 8k km intervals but I am not sure if it will handle it
Man, I'm glad I don't live in Canada, just bought 2 XG2s from Meijer here, came to $6.75 each. The loonie isn't THAT weak, you guys are getting taken for a ride!

I am at 12k km and I'm wondering if I should change the filter on my next oci or keep it for 1 more oci. FYI: according to manufacturer I should change it every oci

Running a tiny XG6607 on a Mazda 3 2014

what is the recommended OCI interval for your car per the OM?

Yes, that is true. The Quaker State filters are usually fairly reasonably priced, all things considered. But, those products are rarely on sale, to compensate, since they're okay already. Canadian Tire just wastes way too much effort, in my estimation, on advertising. Do they really need to have the Fram Ultra on special every three weeks? How about a good, normal price on the thing?

I have removed the Fram Ultra today for inspection purpose after 4000 km. I was afraid that the leaf spring gets weakened over time in these filters and the internals become loose. The coldest temperature this winter was about -27. I tried to press the filter element with my fingers, tried to turn it to see if it's loose. Rock solid. I don't see any potential problem to worry about with this filter.

I guess because it works for them. They are still in business.

4k km is not even a third of its rating

I could of sworn Honda states to change the oil filter every other oil change. Does Mazda not do the same?

I still change my filter every oil change even with Fram Ultra.

Really, I blame the Canadian consumer, who isn't any sharper than a sack of wet mice, but I rant about the retailers. For instance, for years, Superstore and RCWC used to carry M1 at a regular price that was significantly cheaper than Canadian Tire or Walmart. And Superstore had a decent filter selection, albeit Fram orange cans. Well, people wouldn't buy. Superstore got rid of the oil aisle. RCWC hung on for a while, and cut back and brought in other products, including some more off label stuff. They now sell Quaker State Ultimate Durability at an "acceptable" regular price that far beats WM and CT, but not when they are on special. Superstore and RCWC held the price of M1 stable, with an aggregate increase of under $2 per jug, for around twenty years. I even told one guy, a couple years ago, in the Canadian Tire oil aisle, while he was grabbing jugs of "on sale" Mobil 1 that RCWC, just a few blocks away, has it on regular price for cheaper than this sale price. He set the jugs down and walked out the door.

People are too interested in reading Canadian Tire's weekly specials than they actually are interested in getting a good, regular price. As I've said before, I have no interest in competing with the old farts on Friday morning for the cheap jugs of oil at CT, when Imperial Oil will just have it waiting for me at the loading dock.

Canadian Tire suffered when Walmart first came to Canada. Then, they both got comfortable with these incremental price increases and occasional specials, rather than actually having sensible prices all the time. And, if consumers want to go along with it, go right ahead. I won't, and haven't for a few years already. I'd say they both need some competition, but that would be false, because the Canadian consumer is convinced that if they aren't overpaying, they're somehow not getting their money's worth.

I will reuse it. I wanted to see if everything is going fine after some cold starts. Unfortunately the quality of any American made products now is not inspiring. Trust but verify. Especially after having seen so many failed Fram filter on this site.

No Fram ultra has failed yet.

I have seen at least 3 failed Fram Ultras on this web site. Personally I have never had any problems with them. I had a few problems with the Extras before. So it is hard to trust those guys from Fram 100%. I just like the efficiency of the Ultra, otherwise I would chose a more reliable manufacturer if I needed just a regular filter.
