Fram ultra extreme cold extended filter interval

As the search function is just garbage, has anyone pull off an extended filter interval on bad weather regions like East Canada or under -20C winter long?

I am at 12k km and I'm wondering if I should change the filter on my next oci or keep it for 1 more oci. FYI: according to manufacturer I should change it every oci

Running a tiny XG6607 on a Mazda 3 2014
 
Ummm .. Under warranty and manufacturer wants it changed every oil change, and you want to go every second? Spend the $10.

Agree. Best to do what is called for under warranty. After that its whatever you want.

Not sure what you mean by "bad weather regions like East Canada or under -20C winter long".

There is no such thing as "bad weather" when it comes to oil ... either you use an appropriate viscosity grade oil for your local and travelled environment or you don't. I suggest you do; and if you do, there is no issue with OCI specific to climate.

Note that as someone from SK I consider "East Canada" to be mild winter weather, equivalent to most of the northern US (Southern Ontario is south of Minneapolis and shares a Parallel with Northern California).

I would change the filter at each OC if I was utilizing an extended OCI. Your OEM wants you to change the filter at each OC. My comment would be I wonder what justification you have for ignoring that practice.
 
I run a Fram Ultra XG3600 oversized filter on my corolla and avalon in even colder weather, and I plan to use it for multiple OCIs up to 20k miles. Others here have run it 25k with success.

I would consider an oversized ultra filter for multiple OCIs.

However, that being said, while under warranty I would follow the rules and do what the warranty requires with OCIs and filter changes. I wouldn't mess with a warranty on such an expensive purchase.

What's the point of buying a more expensive filter?

Warranty wise, what gives!

Next oci is whenever this winter ends.
 
Also, they bumped up the price to $15 per filter

I'd be running a full synthetic media filter with a silicon ADBV in cold weather like that.
 
I wouldn't worry about running an Ultra for extended mileages in any conditions. They seem to hold up very well regardless of conditions. It's the wire backed media that helps the longevity.

Well, Canadian Tire does need to be punished for their ridiculous pricing practices. Find another supplier, and Walmart isn't the answer, nor is Partsource.

Many folks have pulled off an extended oil filter during the middle of winter season. How many folks have cut one open during these months is anybody's guess. My guess is, not many.

If I was in your shoes, I would leave it on. At 12,000 kms, you would be tossing a filter less than half of what the FU is rated for.

I have seen many FU C&Ps, and not one of them looked bad.

If you insist on changing the filter at every OCI, there are much cheaper options such as the Parts Master or NAPA Pro Select.

Well, the specials are still good, when they're on. Instead of having an Ultra special every two or three weeks, they could just leave the price alone, at that lower amount.

Last special I saw was $11 due to weak loonie.

I thought of running the OEM for 12k km which is rated for 8k km intervals but I am not sure if it will handle it
 
And Canadian Tire is the first company to jump on any excuse to raise the price. If the loonie shot up to par next week, we'd be waiting six months for the prices to come down because of "old stock." If it drops again tomorrow, they'll raise the price the next day, though. One could hypothetically see if Walmart runs an Ultra special, but they don't advertise their automotive specials as much as they used to, and I'm loathe to go in there to check weekly.

$11 still, really, isn't too bad, all things considered. A local supplier might be able to give you a shop rate on parts. The place I get my Fram air filters from would get me the grey cans, if I were so inclined, for about 25% cheaper than Canadian Tire's best sale price. I haven't really checked on the Ultra price, since I'm satisfied with Wix and Hastings, though I have been tempted. He also gets the RP filters, if I were so inclined.

Someone mentioned that Napa may have some better deals.
