Brother changed his oil yesterday and left the filter for me to check out.
Oil was AMSOIL Signature Series 0w20 for about 9k miles, 1 yr.

Little bit of wide spacing near the seam but otherwise looked good.
Only deposits were around the bypass valve.
I didn't tear apart the media as it look clean to me.

As i was looking at the filter something looked a bit odd...
There was no gasket on the base of the filter...

I called him and told him we need to check underneath as it may have 2 gaskets....

Sure enough I drove over there and we checked.... double gasketed....

Removed the extra gasket and topped off with oil...

Little brothers....

I always check for the gasket, seen plenty stick to the engine over the years.

Looks fine, pleat spacing at the seam is something I've seen in several different brands (Fram, Wix, Purolator, MC) so as long as there aren't tears then no big deal.

I don't know why some aftermarket oil filters with flat gasket didn't stay on filter when remove from the engine.

Many Japanese OEM oil filter with semi-circular gasket stays on filter much more. I rarely hear problem with double gasket with OEM filter.

Other than gasket the filter is looking good after almost 10k miles, looks like it can be used for another OCI.

I use the same filter on several vehicles.
Looks great. Even with the bigger Frams like XG2 the only
thing that bothers me is the rather weak looking thread section assembly of the mounting plate. Compared to Motorcraft it looks weak but hasn't ever been an issue

With metal wire backed media that doesn't matter much. Here's one I ran for 12K.

Hmmm... I've never seen uneven pleat spacing on a wire-backed synthetic filter before, but I've cut about twice as many Royal Purple and Puro Synthetics as I have Fram Ultras so far. Not that its harmful, but there's really no excuse for it in that fabrication process.

Good catch!! He owes you for that one.

I have never had the double gasket happen before and I wonder would it really matter. I would think it would compress under the tension and not be an issue.

The old gasket that was stuck to the engine block wouldn't be held in any kind of groove in the can's base plate, so if the oil pressure was high enough it could certainly leak or blow out of place.

I think the deposits on the bypass valve is a good thing.

The filter mounts almost vertical so grit would naturally fall to the bottom of the filter near the bypass valve

Deposits on the valve mean that the flow of oil near the valve is very low,

meaning it never opens?

A double gasket will blow out. Not "might," but "will." Just a matter of whether its on the first startup after the oil change, or the first time you get on it a little harder than normal before the oil's fully warm.

^^^Absolutely!

Count yourself lucky if its never happened to you. I did it on a 63 T-Bird and it came close to ruining the engine. Scared me to death, but also made me super wary of it!
