Fram time again

As far as value for your money, fram is the lowest on the food chain. As mentioned before in this thread, they are overpriced for what you get. Sure, they probably won't make your car blow up, but why buy shoddy construction when you can get much better for the same price, or less if you look around?
If people would smarten up and stop buying them, the price would come down to where they might actually be a decent value for a low end filter.

Lets see, I just paid $2000 in parts (haven't paid labor yet) to have an engine rebuilt.
How many oil changes to I have do to saving $.50 each time to equal that?

Sadly people here won't get over themselves, bashing Fram makes them feel they are superior, to what I do not know. We have heard the same things about Fram a million times and sadly I do not think it will ever stop.

And, unless the filter actually breaks and CAUSES the failure, you won't have many fingers pointed. Just like the Briggs, Honda and Tecumseh engines that last forever with no filter whatsoever. Running with out filtration, or little filtration does not cause immediate engine failure.

Does it reduce the useful life of the engine? Yes.

Well I saw one just a few months ago. A friend of my father has a 66 Plymouth with a nice 440 motor. He installed a standard Fram orange can and filled the motor with Valvoline VR1. He took it from his place to my fathers shop about 1/2 mile away. When he started it back up to leave the oil pressure warning light came on and his gauge confirmed it. He shut it off immediately. I had heard of the poor construction of Frams so we ordered an O Reilly MicroGard with some parts for a customer job. We swapped the filter out, cranked the motor, and the pressure came back up. He never had a problem since with pressure and he is never using a Fram again.

not a failure of the motor, but it sure could have cost this guy a nice 440 if he did not pay attention.

Did they cut the FRAM open to see what happened? ... maybe it collapsed and cut off the oil flow.

He did cut it open. I never saw what it looked like, but he just said in his old timer way "it was pretty tore up looking"

Three problems in this thread. I used them for many years, w/o issue, then joined BITOG read all the negative press about them and started using Purolator. Not worth it in my book. 3 engines in this thread alone, why take chances? There are better filters for the same money or less.

I agree. I mean is it really worth a very expensive engine to use a questionable product that is really no less expensive than its better constructed competitors? And even if it were cheaper to buy a Fram vs the variety of other brands....the engine in your car is worth it not to cheap out filters that keep the lifeblood of the engine flowing and clean. I will run the 3.40 microgard O Reilly's brand before a more expensive Fram.

The environment inside an engine is harsh and would you rather have glued cardboard holding things together or metal and/or Polymer?

Even though there havent been that many catastrophic cases of Fram filters failing, there are many more documented cases here of minor failures. Since many of the people on this board are more conscientious of things like filter performance you begin to notice how poorly the Fram filters perform. I recently changed a Fram filter on my John Deere 160 lawn tractor (installed it before I was reading BITOG). I noticed that with this filter when I checked the oil hot, it would be right on the mark, but when it was cold, it was 1/4 Qt over capacity. This was the drainback valve failing and sending the contaminated oil right back into the engine since the filter is mounted gasket down on this engine. I changed the Fram out a couple of weeks ago for a Supertech and the oil level is consistent hot or cold. This is an example of why I will not buy a Fram again. I have run Purolator, John Deere, Fram and Supertech filters and the only one to fail was the Fram.

My toilet just overflowed.... You guessed right the problem was a Fram filter in the tank..... My coffee this morning was extra thick tasted bad.... You guessed it it was a plugged up Fram Filter as the problem..... They just cause all kind of trouble.....

They do, they are just horrible.
