Fram time again

Fortunately Fram has lost enough of this market that I only see one every couple of weeks. We hate to cut them because the steel is so thin it collapses. But here are the two that we took off customer's cars in the last few weeks.
First you can see is a PH9837. The base is rusted and the center tube did not seal.

Then comes this PH966B that basically collapsed in 3000 miles.

Now I can go back to my car

You would think they would take steps to rectify and correct the filters. They should be fine for 2.5/3k OCI's but routinely seeing the orange cans cut open would leave a customer doubting the use of it.
 
I have never used the orange cans but a few times I used 'Fram Though Guard' gray cans.That was before I knew what Fram is...

Lets see, the usual stock lines are:

"Paper end caps are plenty strong, it doesn't matter"

"all those extra folds in a Purolator or Wix element restrict oil flow!"

and other equally logical (and I use that word in jest) lines...

no problems here, have been using them for the last 39 yrs,but I do regular oil changes and not annuals, get over yourself your not telling us anything we haven't heard a million times

I had an engine failure due to a Fram. Back in 1996 before I knew better I had a Fram on a 1989 Mustang 5.0 and it burned up the cam & main bearings because it collapsed inside and restricted flow.
 
Actually a close friend of mine works in a shop and he recently had a customer bring in a 2007 Dodge Ram with a failed fram filter. Parts of the filter had actually circulated throughout the engine and completely plugged the pickup screen. He noted additional damage that he repaired in the upper part of the engine. He was able to get the truck back on the road, but who knows how much life was left in the engine after that. Not to mention the expense of the repair.
 
I just don't understand the logic in using a marginal (at best) filter when a quality filter can be had for the same, and in a lot of cases, less money.
 
2 claims in this thread only. There are probably claims or issues that cropped up from their use that people don't know about it.

Basically its a matter of quality. For the price of an orange can you can get a Supertech filter which is better quality or a Wix etc.

Would you pay $3 for a bag of potato chips that was crushed into tiny crumbs or $3 for a bag of nice and whole potato chips? Pay money for an oil container made of plastic wrap that when squeezed would spill oil all over the place or for a container that actually can contain the oil?

There is just enough, and then there is better than enough.
 
How about the Ecore that failed on the engine with the blocked off bypass? How many Pure Ones and Wixes are there out there compared to Frams?

Yeah, they are junk and I haven run one in about 10 years.
 
Well, in the bottom photo, the pleats have been 'pushed around', but from what I can see, they are still attached to the end-caps, and still fairly straight - it has not 'practically collapsed'.

Not sure it's an entirely fair test, a filter on an engine in a second or third world country, where they are using some group 1 20W-50 or straight-40 weight and poor air filtration; where the oil is probably as thick as mollases from dirt ingestion.
 
How many Fram cans are sold compared to any other brand? I've seen cutups of the filters where the end caps were no longer attached. I've seen a Fram can collapse on itself on my own 94 Jeep Wrangler after about 2.5k miles(it suctioned in onitself a bit, almost as if it was squeezed).
 
When you look at the orange wall of doom at so many places, they must dominate the DIY market. Not so sure about the quick lubes. I think Purolator now makes many of the filters used. My experience is that the current Purolators are not as much better than Fram as they used to be. In fact, I am almost tempted to run a Fram again just to see what they are like now. A brand needs to be judged on its current products. 10 years ago a L 10193 had twice the media a PH 3950 had. Now?
 
fram doesnt really do much to update the products. People have been seeing the same cut ups for 7 or 8 years now.

I am not saying all of frams products are bad. The 10 dollar one is pretty good.
