I've never used a Fram "OCOD" and will be going to PepBoys to use their coupon for oil. It will be for my mom's beater Rendezvous so it gets whatever is cheapest. I'm considering picking up a Fram for it. If there's any concerns on quality I'll pick something else up. What do you guys think? It gets a 4k-5k mile OCI which is about 7 months. Oil used in it will be either Castrol GTX SynBlend/ ProLine/ or MAG 1

If you like the cheapest oils and Nitrile ADBVs with glued end-caps, go for it. It's your call!

Metal end caps have no glue... ? Learn something every day here...!

Personally, I would step up 1 and go with a TG, the silver can... more, better media, silicone adbv, and like a buck or two more...

Easier to glue paper to paper than to metal.

IIRC many Denso have NO end caps at all - just globby glued pleats. Instant FAIL!, right?

I would try to find a non ecore CHAMP (autostore brand or STP)

Anyone recall Lee MaxiFilters -for those heavy oil grade weeks ?

Was that Champ Labs? Come on you geezers, chime in

Why are you guys recommending he spend a few extra $$ for a upgraded filter?

The OP stated the vehicle is for his mom's "beater" that gets "whatever is cheapest"

The OCOD will offer plenty of peace of mind for a short 4-5k OCI.

Ocod is a solid filter to 5k oci. Or longer if your vehicle specs longer. They match or exceed oem specs. Il be going 7500 oci on my 2 Kia sorentos with them. Tough gaurd is a better filter but 4-5k like you stated ocod is perfect for you no need to spend more unless you went to syn oil and longer oci. Low end wix would also be great I'm not sure what pep boys sells.

THe original problem with "OCOD" wasn't that it would cause problems to your engine, it as that (at the time) you could get equivalent or better filters for less. But times and prices have changed, and now the OCOD is among the cheapest standard level filters. Go ahead and use it with confidence, it's not going to harm your engine.

Money isn't a problem, but the '03 Buick Rendezvous has been driven hard and put away wet, as long as it's got clean oil in it that's all that matters to me. It gets the cheapest fuel and air filters and used tires, whatever is the cheapest to keep the beast going down the road! I changed the air filter in it for the first time in at least 60k-70k miles.

The rear end (AWD) has howled like a wolf for 70k miles and the front end is shot. It isn't worthy of premium things LOL.

Sounds like the orange can will suffice.

Thanks guys!

OCOD is fine for 5k OCI's.

Any comments about the cardboard end caps being "bad" are from people who don't really understand how an oil filter functions...it's not the weakness they claim it is.

Truth be told it isnt a bad filter, but their are better out there. Good luck OP!

Absolutely correct.
Fibre end caps perform great and adhere to the filter far better than metal is able, thus a better seal.
There's nothing wrong with fram. In my known clean engines I'm using rebadged tough guards for 20000 miles, yes miles and upon dissection there is no visible failures anywhere and the drain back valve is still easily pliable.
So an orange can easily fulfils it's advertising.

So just stop changing the oil and filter...seriously. What are you going to do, send it to the junk yard with "clean" oil after the front or rear end give way? Nonsensical. But hey, the guy that gets the engine from the junk yard will thank you. Think how clean those ring lands will be when the tie rod falls off and the truck goes sliding into a ditch or guard rail.

I'd spend the extra couple bucks and get an Ultra.

Why would I send it to the junk yard with a dirty engine and not change the oil? It's a car that has always had its oil changed since new every 4k miles or so, so I know the engine is clean. I have all new control arm bushings and tie rods waiting to go in, just haven't gotten around to doing it. The rear end howling is common and it hasn't changed in the last 70k miles so I don't care at all. As long as it keeps going down the road that's all that matters.

It's actually been amazingly reliable. For the past 141k miles the ONLY repairs done to it have been a leaky water pump at around 100k, a bad coolant temperature sensor at around 100k, a harmonic balancer at 130k, and a leaky heater hose I just fixed. Those have been the ONLY repairs on the car.

Absolute nonsense. Cardboard and glue may be great for art projects, but metal endcaps provide added rigidity and integral support for the filter. Why do you think that all the top end filter models use metal? Its not because of synthetic media, its because filter manufacturers know metal = better.
