FRAM oil is now available @AAP

I don’t think so. As PimTac said, RGT is or will be discontinued. Autozone got rid of it last year, together with VME.
They just swapped the Carquest brand for the Fram, or so it seems.
It is? Still see it being sold at Walmart and other places and I found no news online about it being discontinued.

I just read through this thread and I have a question.

Several members have commented about conflicting authorizations. I'm wondering which ones, and why do they conflict? If someone could be more specific it would be really helpful. I know someone at Amalie and I'd like to know as much as possible about the issue before calling.

FWIW we have a 2009 Winnebago View on a 2008 Sprinter 3500 chassis. It's close to the 11,000 lb GVWR and we do a lot of mountain driving. I don't baby it. For that reason I've always used 5W-40 -- mostly Valvoline part no. VV966, SynPower MST European Formula. As many of you know, VV966 no longer has MB-Approval 229.51 (it's now 229.5). Thus my current search for a replacement.

The following is a list of 5W-40 oils that are on the BEVO list *and* actually available in the U.S.:

1) PENTO HIGH PERFORMANCE II SAE 5W-40 ($6.90 to $7.50 per quart)

2) Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 ($10.69 per qt. reg. price at NAPA)

3) MOTUL 8100 X-CLEAN 5W-40 ($41 for 5L on Amazon)

4) LIQUI MOLY Top Tec 4110 ($45 for 5L on Amazon)

5) Euro 5W40 Synergy Synthetic -- Northland Products Company, WATERLOO, IOWA/USA (hard to find, price?)

6) AMSOIL EUROPEAN CAR FORMULA 5W40 ($$$)

7) Fram Full Synthetic 5W40 Euro Motor Oil ($24 per 5 qt jug at AAP) Supposedly has MB 229.51 approval, but not on Bevo list.

If the Fram oil meets/exceeds MB 229.51 it is a great deal. My contact at Amalie tells me that Amalie had a 5 year contract with MB that ended Jan. 2020. Amalie did not want to continue paying MB and did not renew the contract, but the oil is the same.

Still wondering...

Running it in my kids MK4 VR6 Jetta without losing any sleep or questioning my choices. Like some others have stated, it's an Amalie 5w40 and will do its job just fine.

We needed something to fill the sump and AAP was the only store with the filter in-stock. Price was good enough so we rolled the dice on two jugs of this. The engine has 125k, unknown history, likely was neglected to some degree based on its exterior condition. But we dumped in this mystery oil and will send off a sample to Blackstone after 5k of mostly short-tripping.

Will we stick with it over time? If the price is right, I'd say its likely. There aren't many local choices for 5w40, so its between this and RT6/Castrol Edge/Mobil 1 Euro. Cheers!

I will sort of agree that is definitely a mystery oil, the one that as outlined in this thread Amalie claims to have competing approvals that cannot be simultaneously met.

There are more than a couple 5W-40 oils available at Walmart that don't obfuscate on approvals and specifications.

Plus the Mercedes-Benz approvals aren't written correctly for actual approvals. I couldn't find this brand on the VW nor the Audi list either.

That Amale segregated listing seems to be another fabrication just like the Fram list, only worse.
I found it on a VW list, but only for 505 00 and 505 01 not 502 00

If it goes in an oil change special, i may just try it to try it

Edit: yea i did realize that there Are in fact Orange bottles.

Does this mean we will get the Orange Bottle of Doom/Delight?
And this is how I got it. I had some $5 AAP rewards to use before they expired, so I bought a couple of 0W20 oil change specials for my Mazda3 and RAV4

Changes coming up in the next month. But with the relatively low requirements for those applications, I don't fear using this for 7500-10k OCIs in the cars.

Ain't worth sweating over. It's oil with additives made by a reputable blender. I have my own stash choices and this isn't one of them. But its good enough for a high school kid that doesn't give a **** about the specs. If he can manage not to trash the car or blow it up by his own stupidity, I'm confident this lube choice will be sufficient for the old VR6. Use it or don't. It's generally the same argument for most threads here.

I understand. My beef is just with blenders that post nonsense as we see here. If they are that careless in that area then for me I don't want to trust them with anything else.

But maybe that's just me.

To blow more minds, I have an oil in my VW that only has an API SP rating and A3/B3. And my wife's gas Jetta has been fed RT6 for most of its 130k+ and has zero issues.

Black magic and BITOG heresy at my house.

Well you are welcome to do as you wish but at least you should be able to walk into it with proper information. It's when the lubricant company publishes information that cannot be true is where I have a problem. At that point you are making a decision based on falsehoods.

I get it. Whomever was charged with slapping it all together was certainly swinging for the fence. It's a bit irresponsible, sure. Misleading...yeah. Ok, but its still a known product. Maybe they'll repent soon and put the correct info together for us so we can all rest easier.

On a related note, whenever the times comes for the UOA, I'll try to remember to post it. My only concern with the motor after it's last analysis was elevated iron. The joys of buying a used beater!

Specifically which competing approvals cannot be simultaneously met, and why?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I simply don't know and would like to learn.

FWIW, Amalie does make their own brand of 5W-40 full synthetic that meets MB 229.51:
https://www.amazon.com/Amalie-Elixer-Synthetic-dexos-Quart/dp/B01N6X1R9P
http://www.amalie.com/Passenger-Car-Motor-Oil/Elixir-Full-Synthetic/5W40-DEXOS2

https://www.amazon.com/Amalie-Elixer-Synthetic-dexos-Quart/dp/B01N6X1R9P

I imagine there's a good chance that's the stuff in the Fram bottle.
