Any one heard of Fram oil filters disintegrating? While putting a few in my cart, a guy told me not to buy these. I told him I have been using Fram for 20+ yrs. He said he has taken a few apart and found parts of the filter had disintegrated. I have been cutting the filters apart for years to get all the oil out and recycle the metal. Have never noticed any of the filter disintegrated.

He really seemed like an arrogant know it all, so I just started to ignore him!!

Go to a Juno yard and check out how many blown motors have Frams on them. Maybe its just because it's a popular filter, maybe it's because there actually is something to it.

Probably not.

Honestly, I prefer to order densos or use purolators/motorcrafts if I'm in a pinch.

I've seen aftermarket bike filters disintegrate... but they sat on the shelf for too long if I had to guess.

Thats crazy. Not to say there arent better filters out there, but Fram is decent. I recently bought a fram tough guard and think it looks like an alright filter.

Never had issue with FRAM,

OCOD is named so bad because its mediore filter that can be found EVERYWHERE. of course the number of faulty filters goes up.

Bingo.

0.1% failure rate on 1,000,000,000 is still 1,000,000 faulty products.

I restored an Army generator that was from WWII. Along with the spare parts came a couple of cases of oil and fuel filters dated 1944. They work just fine and the generator has been in use since 1973. In the first year of use after the restoration there were several used oil analysis done to determine an OCI and there were no problems. Also the cartridge filter were examined before being disposed of and there was never an indication of the media discriminating. Do the calculation, 1944 to 1973 would be 29 years on the shelf.

Cool story. It's amazing how long things can last sometimes... against all the odds. A few years ago, some Russians dragged a tank out of a swamp where it had been since '43 or so. They had it running in just a few days... it's all on youtube. Last year or so a guy here sent an oil sample in from a tractor that had been sitting since the '80s... the oil in the crankcase was perfectly usable according to the UOA. He didn't, of course, but he could have. Thing is about the time you start to think you can't go wrong with the old stuff, you get a bite taken outta the heinie to make you honest. My luck anyway.

Fram does not make BAD filters. Its already been said but when you mass produce something, a few are going to have some issues that slipped passes quality control. The Fram "OCOD" is not a extended OCI filter, yet some people leave them on too long then when something happens they blame the filter, when they should blame themselves for not changing it in time. I just cut open a bunch of Frams, you should check it out, you will see that they are not bad filters at all. The OCOD may look a little rough around the edges so to speak, but it gets the job done just fine.

I don't like the orange can because in my cars the orange can makes the engine rattle when first started. That's my reason. But they do have a steel center and there's no way imo for the element to get through those small holes.

Coolant leaking into, or, excessive moisture in the engine from short trips (and the concomitaant sludging) i suspect would be the biggest cause of filter disintegration.

Wonder who they would have discriminated against if they were discriminating?

The "heinie" biter you are referring to is named Murphy.Saw Mr. Murphy in action during many years in power generation. One such occurrence, a hole about an inch in diameter, cost our company over a million dollars in lost generation and repair. One can't be too vigilant.

It's the spell checker and it was late and I was getting ready to hit the sac.

I'll bet you can guess what I meant. Give it a shot.

I agree with that.. However do you agree there are better filters for the same $ or even less $???

I think even the OCOD Fram can last 3000 miles with no problem... however when you can get a PUROLATOR CLASSIC or a Motorcraft for cheaper or just a few pennies more what do you think?

The media "coming apart" is probably what he meant vs disintegrating. That is what happened to me years ago with a Fram that caused an engine failure. I don't buy it crumbling away which is what disintegrating would mean to me. However, if what he meant was the media was coming apart( i.e. ripped/it had a hole, torn away from end cap, a chunk of it broken off, etc... that is possible. Some type of media failure basically is what I mean.
