Fram oil filter leaking

I change the oil in my wife's friends 2011 Honda CRV. She came over Friday to have me change the oil. Last time I changed it I used a Fram oil filter. The oil had about 8000 miles on it.

I pull the car in, get it jacked up and notice there is a good size puddle of oil on the garage floor. After looking it over it seems the filter was leaking. When I started it up there was a constant stream of oil running down the filter. There wasn't any oil on the dipstick but thankfully there was nearly 3 quarts in the pan. Judging by how fast it was leaking and the fact it was only 2+ quarts low it must of just started leaking. Thankfully it didn't start leaking even a few days earlier or we would be looking for a new engine.

Needless to say I wouldn't ever buy a POS fram filter again!

I'm guessing the leak was in this area.

Funny, seven years ago this same filter was on a Mitsubishi Lancer.

Some put oil filter too tight, some put oil filter too loose.

Also it worked w/o issue for ~8000 miles before leaking.

Which Fram was it? If an Ultra, it shouldn't have leaked. If it was a lower grade economy model, it may have been overdue for a change.

It was a lower grade model. Still shouldn't leaked in 8000 miles.

Bad to use "someone else's video" as an example because it's not the actual filter in question. Did you check carefully to see if any road debris might have put a small hole in the can since this didn't show up for 8000 miles?

And yes, over tightening can cause issues. Never go beyond 3/4 turn after the oiled base gasket makes first contact.

All brands of oil filters have shown to leak in some way or the other over the years.

Contact FRAM. I recently had an ever so light weep on a FRAM Ultra and they had me send it to them for testing, then sent me back the testing results, all of which I posted on here. They also sent me two free replacements for my trouble. They have excellent support.

My Nephew had a Fram blow, lost all his oil. Completely trashed engine. Nephew contacted Fram who told him to send the blown filter ton them. Like an idiot, my dumb a$$ nephew did. Fram denied there was anything wrong with filter, and kept the filter. Nephew had to pay to replace his Escort engine.

Usually an oil light would go off to let you know there was no pressure from oil. Got a picture of the filter?

Did your nephew take pictures of the failed filter? Like when you said "blow" obviously the failure would be quite evident, so I would assume he took pictures of the unit for documentation before letting it out of his hands given that he had a disabled vehicle as a result.
