What do you guys think of Fram Orange Can and Tough Guard filters for Very short OCI's, say 3-5K. My cousin uses them for 3K and they seem OK, so what do you think?

I think the fear of Frams is overstated. Yes they have had failures just like the beloved Purolators and other popular brands. I think Fram is getting better. The X-Tended Guard I used last OCI was a beast of a filter. I would do 3-5k with confidence.

If you or him are worried, cut one open and see. Personally, I'd be more comfortable with a TG but but for short to normal OCIs like that I don't think there will be a problem.

Most of the time you can buy better filters for less but if not it wouldnt worry me. They should be up to the task for standard intervals for the speced vehicles.

As chubbs 1 stated, the "fear" of Fram filters is grossly
overstated. The Fram ToughGuard and Extended Guard filters
perform as well as Purolator and others. In fact, a Fram TG filter cobtributed to an outstanding ISO particle count
of 14/13/10 on one of our last oil changes as reported through
a used oil analysis. This level of oil cleanliness has been repeeated several times with the TG filter. The TG filters can be used confidantly 5-7K and the XG to 10K.

I used orange can Frams for years on a number of engines and never saw a problem.
I doubt thst your cousin will either.
For the record, the '97 Accord currently has an OCD (free after MIR) while the BMW has a Fram catridge in it.
I'm not worried.

For oil changes at 6000 miles or so maximum, I see no problem with the OCOD. But don't "stretch" it. I would never make it do double duty or an extended drain. The Tough Guard is more robust and will be in most cars OK to about 7500.
