Fram needs to make up it's mind

After a quick trip to Walmart last night, I picked up a few filters for the wife's Corolla to add to the collection- a SuperTech and a newer gold-labeled Fram Xtended Guard. It's a solid-looking filter that I won't hesitate to use, but I was surprised that the labeling on the filter itself says 'Extended Guard' as opposed to 'Xtended Guard' which is what is printed on the packaging.

They're in a lawsuit with X-tense, likely the result of a cease and desist order taking it's time for the change to get through production.

I know another weird anomaly in the Fram world was that I bought a bunch of Tough Guards on clearance with the new box, but inside all of the boxes they had the older writing style, but with the new silver paint. I think it may have been a manufacturing error and that's why they were all on clearance. I got a bunch of their old box Extended Guards on clearance there too, along with a High Mileage filter.

My first thought when I read your post was that you have a counterfeit oil filter. Misspellings are a common giveaway for counterfeit parts. But most counterfeiters usually target high-end brands... so that can't be the case with Fram!

No Fram is a high end brand. Like some others, it puts a higher price on junk and markets it. Those that pay a high price without checking quality are even bigger suckers that those that buy cheap without checking quality. Outside BITOG, who would would ever guess the cheap ST's seem to be a better filter than the FRAMS? Took me a long time to get up the guts to buy an ST. that was likely in 4 BB, before BITOG.

That's funny. A TESS trademark search only pulled up the "Extended Guard" spelling as being registered to Honeywell.

Maybe the box is a typo?

I have a silver box XG3387A ("Extended Guard") and a gold box ("Xtended Guard"). The silver box has (R) - Registered Trademark; the gold box just has (TM) - Trademark.

I have 2 new gold XG filters. A 7317 and a 3614, and both filters and boxes are exactly like yours.........No worries.

Funny, I said the same thing a while ago, and I got laughed at! I've got the new gold can on my 03 Accord 2.4, and so far, so good.

If color turns you on so much, you can always spray paint your filters any color you want, even to match the engine color.
