That's the problem, though, Jim. We know that fairly idiotic marketing "works." We know that word of mouth works, too. So, we have to expect that bad word of mouth, particularly those things that have undergone amplification for many years, is detrimental.

Mercedes, for instance (or any very expensive premium brand) has a certain aura about it, and it's not because every one of us has bought a Mercedes and tried one. Fram gets a lot of heat, and, similarly, it's not because every one of us has bought and tried one, much less experienced a failure, either.

Product brand name and "reputation" is everything, and is something that is built-up or torn down with time and experiences by consumers. That's true with any product, and reputations can change with time of there's a reason, but it's usually not an over-night process.

Again, what I see here and generally over the internet is opinion presented as evidence. You gotta raise an eyebrow, for example, when the purported "evidence" starts with, "I hate Fram!" Totally objective, to be sure! ( : < ) Further, I often see the wrong conclusions drawn about particular problems and the blame placed on Fram.

Well, what I will say Jim... is that I have found other filters that are both more affordable, and that I prefer the design of.

If you actually read the article on the Jeep Forum, the man who toured Fram actually heard first hand about their Quest to FIX the issues that DID exist relative to quality control. Many things are indeed subjective and anything can be questioned... but I firmly believe that Fram had some issues that needed fixing.. as have other manufacturers.

I completely agree with your first paragraph, at least as it relates to everything below the Ultra. That filter is a standout for the money.

I have taken that Fram tour as well, along with a couple of other Bitogers. If Jay ever makes that offer again, you should take him up on it. It will blow your mind!

Yep! Fixing quality control is ALWAYS an issue with EVERY company. It's not unique to Fram and if a person wants to heavily research Purolator, Wix or any other company, you'd probably find eras where they were having trouble. In fact, I'm beginning to think Wix is headed there now. Fram actually seems like they are on the upswing now in many ways, what with new owners and being merged with Champ Labs.

I just don't see that much difference in the way filters are made to be loyal to one brand or the other. Everyone has a few good design features that are unique but, for the most part, those features are just different routes to the same destination. They all get there in a trouble free manner (for the most part). For me it always comes down to the price of the performance. That's why I jumped hard onto the Fram Ultra bandwagon. It meets my performance standard at one heck of a good price! If that situation changes, it will take me about a nanosecond to change to what is best at that time, irrespective of brand.
