That doesn't look like anything media related to me, it looks more like a fitment issue where the filter was crushed when the cap was tightened. This is a common issue with some BMWs too, the aftermarket filters don't fit well.Try to find a filter that's wire backed.
What oil and filter went back in and on?View attachment 1667522017 Colorado 3.6L 7500 mi oci 5w-30.
Filter did not tear but collapsing and end cap separated at spot indicated. View attachment 166753View attachment 166754View attachment 166755
So that means the filter was squished because it was too tall correct? That doesn't look like anything media related to me, it looks more like a fitment issue where the filter was crushed when the cap was tightened. This is a common issue with some BMWs too, the aftermarket filters don't fit well.
Just a wild hypothesis, but maybe when the pleats become saturated with oil, they expand so the only place they can expand to is in the vertical plane? This would mean the center has to reduce its diameter. So that means the filter was squished because it was too tall correct?
Very true. Even with BMW OEM filters, they need to be "clearanced" with the cap. Meaning the cap must push down thru the top hole of the filter before installing. That doesn't look like anything media related to me, it looks more like a fitment issue where the filter was crushed when the cap was tightened. My co-worker took this filter from his daughters truck yesterday. I saw it in the drain bucket this morning and picked it up right away. Like I said there are no tears in the media but it has pulled away from the end cap…..both ends actually. What oil and filter went back in and on?
My daughters had two 3 series (2014 and 2020) and never pulled a filter out that looked crushed (I use Mann or OE on the BMWs). My main concern here is the end cap separation.Very true. Failure to do that could cause this same problem.
I didn’t see it but he said it’s just a spring in the center. It’s a 3.6 Chevy 2017 Colorado. How much space is between the filter center and what it installs on in the filter cavity? Looks like the delta-p was acting on the filter, and if there is no or little support for the filter in the center hole, then the dP will try to collapse the filter. Also, might want to verify the filter bypass valve is functional.
