Fram Extra Guard Vs Tough Guard

Anyone know the difference between a Fram Extra Guard and tough guard? Tough Guard up to 15,000 and extra guard is 10,000 protection, Synthetic media and 99% efficiency for tough Guard...Any other advantages? For short oil changes under 6,000 miles I personally use the tough Guard.

Your guideline is safe.

It can vary by model#, but in general the media is different. Tough guard has been my go to if I'm helping someone change their oil, and/or if I ever need a filter "right now" and cant wait on rockauto.

Anecdotally I have an orange PH3600 right now on a JD Gator, TG on my Kubota tractor and wouldn't mind using an orange can again but lately have been splurging on Endurances.

There are many cut open examples on this forum, or check out Whip City Wrencher on Youtube for many example cut opens.

I'm going to throw down the gauntlet and say Fram is probably the most consistent of the bunch IMO for quality. Wix is trash, and friends dont let friends use Bosch. :poop:

Of those two, I like the Tough Guard. I have a TG3614 on my zero turn and a TG11955 waiting to go for my F-150. I switched to the Tough Guard after Walmart discontinuing the Super Tech MP line.

Just changed my oil, Had a extra guard on standby but decided to pickup a tough Guard TG-7317, What I like about fram is you can buy them anywhere if you need a filter in a pinch.

Appreciate everyone responses.

Watch some of the YouTube videos on oil filters, especially the ones by "Brand Ranks", you will never buy a Tough Guard or Extra Guard again. If you want Fram, spend the extra dollars on an Ultra and have some piece of mind. If you must go cheap be sure to check the date on the filter.

Isn't the Ultra also made with fiber endcaps too and is essentially a TG in a different colored can? Now it looks like you have to step up to an Endurance to get a "good" Fram oil filter. They aren't cheap either. $13 right now at Walmart.

The Ultra and it's bother the Titanium still have metal end caps.
What had changed about the Ultra then, is the media different now? I've read several times on here that it's been "downgraded" from what it used to be. I know the wire backing is long gone.

Went from wire backed dual-layer synthetic media and a fiber leaf spring seal in the end cap, and holes in the center tube to non-wire backed blend media with a thin synthetic media top layer, and no more leaf spring fiber seal on the end cap and louvers in the center tube. There was a mix of those configurations through the design aspect transitions (ie, the leaf spring fiber seal disappeared when it still had wire backed media). Been a lot of threads as the changes started appearing quite a while ago (over a year ago or more IIRC).

That is strange, at my WalMart the Ultra is between 8 - 9 dollars for my C-Max. Metal end caps. The Ultra is my fouth choice if a Purolator Boss, Mobil 1 Ext. Perf., or Wix XP is not available.

Do you drive a C-Max or a C-Max Energi? I've just reached 22 months and 18,500 miles on a Fram Ultra in my 2017 C-Maxe Energi. I will be switching to the Mobil1 M102-A at the next change because I didn't like the look of the Fram Endurance cartridge that wen into the wife's Prius V a few months back.

The EG has changed in some sizes. The 3614 is one of them. I suppose the TG will follow. Very different than before.

An Energi. And yes, I know Ford says 20,000 miles or 2 years on the oil, unless the oil change light comes on sooner. But oil and filters cost little compared to engines. So, I am on a 7500 mile or 1 year plan. Also, I run my Energi more like a Hybrid. I plug in only 2 - 4 times a month. Hybrid engines have many, many more start - stop cycles than regular ICE engines with start - stop technology. This puts demands on oil to keep everything well lubricated. Ever done an engine oil analysis after one of those long oil change intervals?
