Fram Extra Guard CH10246 - FAIL!!!

I never had this issue on my 22 Canyon using supertech filters. The one time I used an STP filter and it had minimal distortion, but not close to the OPs filter. The Supertech does have the plastic cage inside the filter, the STP does not. I’ll upload pics shortly

maybe the 2 bottles of rislone turned into gel in the cold weather.

What in the wide world of sports? That's crazy. Tough to install cartridge filters incorrectly so can't imagine that was the issue. On our VWs you insert it into the housing then screw it on...pretty straightforward. I've never seen any of mine on the 5 vehicles we have with them come out deformed.

While I can't definitely rule it out, I'm not going to flat out blame installer error here. Seen a fair number of aftermarket cartridge anecdotes posted here where 'fit in the housing' was the key factor in the cartridge looking pinched, smooched or worse post use. Fram XG on BMW a good example. And GM ecotec engine cartridges are often smooched looking post use, even the preferred US made Hengst cartridge.

It's also the reason why when asked about a recommendation for a cartridge filter, with fit in housing being key why I'll usually mention the OEM first. That said, if one has good experience with an aftermarket cartridge, go with it. OP best move here, go OEM or a cartridge he's has good results with in the past. My.02

An Ecore center tube in the cartridge filter is good if the cage in the filter housing allows too much gap between the filter pleats on filters without the Ecore center tube.

Hengst filters, made in Germany, no plastic cage

Supertech filter, made in China, w plastic cage

I like that the supertech has the ecore plastic cage
If both for the same application, the added ecore cage is a nice feature for media reinforcement, imo. That said, speculating that the application(s) these intended for have a center tube built into the housing? Some/many manufacturers do approach cartridge fitment that way.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I installed a Fram Ultra Synthetic XG10246 and followed the correct install procedure. I removed the filter after installation to verify it didn't buckle or twist and it looked perfect.

What I can tell you is that my oil pressure is much more rock steady. With the previous filter it was fluctuating quite a bit, say 45psi +/-5psi while driving so oil was probably getting past the filter. Now at a constant speed the oil pressure doesn't budge.

It is too late to tell but I believe the bad filter was made just a bit too long and the normal installation procedure buckled and twisted it a bit.
