Just got an oil filter cutter but I am unsure how to take off the metal caps to inspect the pleats. Anyway.

1 obvious difference I see is that it's a metal crimp. No synthetic crimp as I saw like years ago.
The purlato boss cover( on the left) is heavier than the fram endurance on the right

The filter media for the boss is narrower but taller.
The filter media for the endurance is wider but less taller.

Boss is integrated other one typical spring.

Some needle nose plyers should work to get the metal crimp off. Thanks for sharing & congrats on the cutter.

You won't get it off the BOSS easily, I've tried. I've heated other end caps and they come right off. The BOSS's adhesive has a serious bond. One of the reasons they are so good.

He wanted to know how to take off the endcaps. Heat them up. But the BOSS is going to take some work compared to the Fram

If his goal is to remove the media and lay it out flat, popping the end caps off isn't going to accomplish that because the potting material will still be holding the pleats together. It needs to be cut out like Whip City does it to unfold and lay it out flat.

Regarding the bypass, is this to say the Boss would be the better design? OP didn’t show the Fram with leaf spring. Also didn’t shine a light in. Here’s the comp. Fram FE has a gap.

A filter with the bypass valve built into the end cap shouldn't leak at all or if it does it won't be anything close to a leaf spring with a big gap. The Boss is inefficient to start with, so it's like a leaky Endurance. 😄
