Fram CORE filter cut open. 4.6 DOHC Ford

I have a 93 Mark VIII that I picked up. The OLM was at 0, but I read that it factors in time passed and the car had been sitting for 9 months. It was running on 6 cylinders when I brought it home. The oil filter was on the car for atleast a year, the mileage on the oil unknown. The oil was also unknown. Didn't look or smell terrible. The dipstick tube was rusted to the tube, but it was full.


this is my first filter cut, I used a sawzall. All I can say is, never again. LOL. I let it drain for weeks but there was still so much oil in the can. That ADBV really works.

The ADBV was very supple. No tears in the media.

The Mark VIII was a flagship model. It had OLM, Average Fuel economy, gallons to empty, adjustable air ride suspension. Touch a button and it will switch to metric. Interesting cars, but a nightmare to work on.

Possibly closer to 3 years. I want to say the TLE Core filters changed from black to orange at least a couple of years ago.

The Fram Core filters made in the latter part of 2015 are orange, and have the tighter cage spacing. The black Core I saw had the old cage spacing, and I think it was made in 2014. Can't remember the exact date. Not sure when the tighter cage spacing was phased in.

3 years is possible. I was told the car did a trip from MD to FL in early 2015, then back, and it was parked and started up once and while. The owner was 78 years old and had several cars.

I think Ecore denotes a style of filter. Yes, I think it is Champ Labs, but it is a style of their lineup. The plastic centertube cage is what I consider to be an Ecore. Maybe there are more characteristics that make it one.

The Fram CORE Walmart Tire and Lube Express is basically the previous Champ made Super Tech filter line, that got a recoated can and moved to the TLE not long after Rank bought Fram after buying Champ.

Same filter line can be found used at Firestone Lube and the new Valvoline jobber filters.

This one would use a combo valve, element itself looks to have held up ok.

Don't know about AFs and GFs. Just saw OF change in THIS recent post.

As an aside, thinking change might be thought due to tear anecdotes but IMO, more likely due to a low bidder situation.

LOL! I noticed you posted this after changing the oil filter. The oil filter is a joy to remove, isn't it? My '93 is retired and will be scrapped out soon. They really can be a nightmare to service and repair.
Does the air suspension still work on yours, or has it been converted to coil? I noticed Ford recently discontinued the front struts for these models and aftermarket new replacements are from China only.

My air suspension works, but will leak down if allowed to decompress after turning off the engine. I wish there was something I could coat the bags with to seal them up. But, if I shut the air suspension off before I turn the car off, the bags stay fully pumped up and hold air for months. The oil filter was not fun to remove. However, I changed the IAC Valve too and that is why I made that comment.

I cut a Fram Core two days ago I took off the church van. It is an ecore filter but it is not the same as the well known Champ version. The media felt and acted like the orange can media when pushed and prodded (strong). Spacing was like above, many more pleats than an orange can would have but less than the other ecore IMO. Also does not have the Champ combo valve but a Fram ADBV and separate bypass.

And the endcaps are the strong fiber like in the orange can not the flimsy felt on the Champ ecore.

Thus the Fram Core name I presume.

The one I cut was a PH16 replacement, it had a notably shorter media cartridge but with more pleats I wouldn't be surprised if the media area was similar. I can't tell which one is cut here.
