These 4 miserable CA cities are in Northern part of the state and three are small communities. Each city has struggled with declining home prices, high unemployment and high crime rates, in addition to the problems all Californians face, like high sales and income taxes and service cuts to help close massive budget shortfalls.

1. Stockton
2. Miami
3. Merced
4. Modesto
5. Sacramento

I am getting tired of these 'list'articles. Guess they are cheap to produce and the statiscal analysis is pretty thin. WHo died and left them the arbtritor of misery? I hope that these articles are a passing fad.

what's the definition of most miserable?

If talking about crime, Richmond, Vallejo, and Oakland should be much higher on the list than this.

I can see why Modesto, Merced, and Stockton got on the list. Stockton is a new development far out of major employment area like the SF Bay, and takes an average of 2-3 hours each way to get to. People buying in that area get a lot of bang for the buck compare to buying in area that is closer to work, speculating that it is worth only going home during the weekend and jobs will spring up in those area. The problem is it didn't, and the market crash. Merced speculation came with many out of town buyer who though it would go up in value in a few years, and the new university campus would provide a lot of rental income. Things didn't turn that way. Same goes for Sacramento.

These big drop has to do with too much rises during the boom and speculation. These are not the typical high population city or county. Many cities (like Sunnyvale or San Francisco) dropped only 20% or so in value. My home actually went up in value during this time.

I'm from Sacramento, and it isn't bad at all. Sure, there have been furloughs and pay cuts, but it's no Detroit. Not sure where their information is coming from.

I got to admit I was born in Miami, FL and I am glad to get out of there.

Not all places in Miami are bad buts its changed a lot since I lived there 22 years ago. With all the crime, drugs, unemployment, congested traffic, illegal immigrants, housing market in shambles, expensive car and home owners insurance, corruption at all levels (city Gov, police/fire Depts, bad public school system and school officials always getting arrested for taking bribes) its no surprise that many are moving out of 305/786 area code.

Miami is a very big city and 70% of it is an armpit, the other 30% is actually nice.

Maybe wherever Burt's from is #6?

If it's so miserable there, why don't they move to Detroit or Flint (who didn't make the list, and are thus less miserable) where you can buy a complete home for $6K to $12K?

I know in some parts of Detroit you can get a home for 10K or less, but the crime there is way too high and there are very few jobs. A relative of mine is there in the medical field, but that is one of the few in demand.

I bet if the article was about the top STATES, California would make the list, too.

Don't make the common mistake of confusing the City of Detroit with the greater Metropolitan area.

I just heard about the city "Stockton" yesterday. Majority of the episodes on the show "Bait Car" are filmed there.

Realy, it cracks me up these "Detroit" experts , they would be quite suprised at the extreme wealth there is in this area. Decades upon decades of high paying auto jobs have made a very strong middle class and a lot of other people very wealthy!

That's why they want to demolish 10,000 abandoned homes, right?

And of course they only have to close down half of their schools unless they get a bailout.

I know those are signs of a city on the rise....

You guys should live in Memphis, TN and let me know where it would rank. anywhere in Kali is better than Memphis, TN.

As odd as this may sound....if you lived here or actually knew anything about Detroit then you would already know, these are actually good signs of progress. A city built and designed to house 4 million plus that has only 700k residents is going to have some vacant homes that need demolishing. And a city designed to educate the children of 4 million people that only has to serve 700k people will have many underutilized schools. For years they have stood in decay while the City ignored the blight, at least today they are discussing ways to consolidate the city to properly size it's services and infrastructure to fit the number of citizens. The delays and intransigence has cost this region millions over the years. Bulldozing the abandoned homes IS progress in Detroit.

Besides, you miss the point anyway. Tell me what do you know about the housing and schools in Birmingham? The Pointes? Grosse Ile? Farmington? Farmington Hills? Bloomfield Twp? Bingham Farms? Plymouth Twp? Canton?...and on and on and on.

If your understanding of Detroit starts and ends at the City lines, then you dont know jack about Detroit. If your understanding of Detroit comes from the MSM you REALLY dont know jack about Detroit.

No, I was not saying all of Detroit is as I described, just parts of it. It is like the region where I live. Alhambra is nice. San Marino is very wealthy and very nice. Kitty corner to them are some rather rough areas too.
