I recently did an oil change on the Accord with TGMO 0w20 and a Honda OEM A02 filter. Just realized tonight that I forgot to lube the "P" gasket on the oil filter, what harm will come from this, if any? Will it leak? I did notice it seemed to turn more than usual when I put it on.

Its gonna be tougher to remove and might need a scraping on the mounting surface. Have a good look before installing the new one.
I'd be taking it off ASAP and oiling it. Before the rubber gets too cooked.

There was probably a little oil film left on the mooting surface I'd guess. Can you see if it's leaking with a mirror or something?

As long as it's not leaking I wouldn't worry about it, but make sure no rubber sticks to the block next time you take the filter off.

EDIT: Previous reply about the rubber getting cooked may have merit though...

There is usually a film of oil left from the last filter. I wouldn't worry about it. Just check to make sure it doesn't stick to the engine when it comes off the next time.

As others have said, don't worry too much about it. Might be a little harder to get the filter off next time. Just make sure to double check that the gasket comes off with the filter and isn't stuck to the engine. (which you should always do anyway)

Wanna explain how that's even a slight possibility???

With oil on the gasket they'll be greater heat transfer from the filter mount to the gasket, so I'd asy just the opposite is true...

If it isn't leaking which is probably a .01% chance, I wouldn't touch it...

Fellow automotive hypochondriac: What do you mean by this?

I thought that the Honda OEM filters had a light coating of some sort of lubricant on the gasket. I haven't installed one in years and they change suppliers all the time, but the one constant has been that P-shaped gasket wedged securely inside a stamped lip. If you manage to remove the gasket it might take something to wedge it back inside the groove.

I was looking at my stash of filters. The PureOne gaskets are PFTE treated and probably come off easily without any oil. The Purolator Classic box mentions an "internally lubricated gasket" and there does appear to be something slightly greasy on the surface. The Wix filters I have feel like the same type of gasket material. They used to have molded gaskets without rounded edges, but it's not a big deal to me that they don't. In any case, the written or pictorial instructions always included oiling the gasket regardless of the brand.

I forgot to lube the gasket once on my Mazda and didn't realize it until the next OCI. Everything looked normal, no leaks and all, but I could not remove the oil filter by hand, which normally is not a problem and I never have to use the oil filter wrench.
Well, that time I had to because that sucker wasn't coming off. When it finally did, the old gasket was stuck to the mating surface. And no, it was not "cooked" to the block because it peeled right off.

I would not run out and change it as some suggested. Just let it be but be prepared that the oil filter may be harder to remove at next OCI and the gasket may get left behind, so remember to check.

No. Honda filter gaskets are dry and must be lubricated lightly with engine oil before installation. Says so right on the filter.

TOYOTA filters DO come with a light amount of some kind of grease, and do not require to be lubricated separately before installation.

My last oil change I experimented with the torque wrench to see how tight I was getting the
filters by hand. I found out that with a well oiled filter gasket, 100 inch pounds is TIGHT.

Although I 1000% agree with the 'don't worry' and 'its fine' crowd, I also 99% know that the OP will have to do something about this. He probably hasn't slept since the thought of an unlubed oil filter gasket entered his mind.

How many oil change places lube the filter gasket? How many cars run around leaking from the filter? Yeah PITA to get off after an iffy lube change, but no leaks, no problems.
