I have a rather extensive vocabulary and usually choose to leverage it when articulating a point or engaging in intelligent discourse. However, there are times when I just like to swear. Usually when I've just whacked my hand off of something that I'm working on or when I'm in the company of friends and it is extremely casual.

While stereotyping somebody can be fun, sometimes the individual we've stereotyped simply doesn't fit into the mold we've built for them. My dad swears, my sister swears, both are PhD's and some of the most intelligent people I've ever met. There is a time and a place for it, IMHO. On this message board, no, I don't think it is generally appropriate. In discussion with people who don't know you, no, I don't think it is appropriate. When you are trying to debate or discuss, no I don't think it is appropriate.

That being said, somebody who chooses to be liberal with profanity may simply enjoy it. I'm certainly not confident in that being a reliable metric for gauging their intellect.

People who are too quick to pigeonhole others with snap judgments often come to incorrect conclusions.

I agree it MAY reflect their intelligence, but I can assure you that I know folks well who can out curse a sailor yet are quite smart and successful. Due to the incredible variations within our species one must be a bit more cautious when evaluating others...
