Said good-bye to an old friend

Gary, she still is around, just look at all these threads reaching out. Wow, I think I have started down that road with my 14 yr old but that is what life is all about. Good to live every day as it may be.....you know the rest. You gave her your best what else is there to say???

If she was suffering and it was obvious that here days were numbered, then you did the right thing Gary.

I had to do the same thing with a 21 year old cat a few years back. The previous few years, it was like he went from doing fine to aging completely in one year. He became totally def, and in the last week, stopped eating and just sat out in the back yard kind of at peace with the fact he was passing away. He then somehow broke his leg. I didn't think twice about putting him down.

Hang in there. I cried like a friggin little girl for a week after putting that cat down. It gets easier when you can start remembering the good times you had with your dog.

I must say that I burst out laughing about the mature tick comment!

While it may be an indictment of my personality, I get along better with animals than I do a lot of people. Hence, my wife and I perform a lot of animal rescue work and have travelled your road many times.

Your beagle and all of us animal lovers thank you and your wife for providing 19 years of love, comfort, and security.

I am sorry for your loss.
I almost cried when our Pyr died.
He died of natural causes, but would have had to be put down pretty shortly had he not.
A dog is a part of the family, and it is sad to see them pass.
At least your dog had a long life among people who cared for her.

Gary, I've never been a dog person, though I can understand the bond people and dogs have. I wish our human friendships could be as simple and strong. In the last 11 years I've lost 4 cats who reached the end of their days while in my care, one of which I'd had 16 years since kittenhood, and I miss 'em yet.

Write about him. You don't necessarily have to show it to anyone, not even your wife, if you don't want to. But it'll help.

Sorry for your loss Gary. I know how you feel. But you know they have done their job when they made your life more "interesting"
and "fun".

So tough, yet so worth it.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts. Ripply (our Rot'n'Lab) is lonely. She'll probably take a week to stop looking for where Betsy is.

We're debating about another animal. We're not in the mindset to get another dog any time soon, but we're discussing if we want to engage in another long(er) term commitment when we know our level of attachment and the eventuality that we've endured too many times.

19 years! That speaks of a well cared for and loved puppy.

This is one of the tough things to go through in life.
You will probably see her out of the corner of your eye for several months, then actually turn and look.

Sorry to hear about this. We have two beagles, the oldest is 3yrs. She belonged to my son that passed away in 2008. She is a sweetheart. I dread to think about that day that I know will come.
