Fording streams and floods

Just thought I'd add this sample the Nissan dealer gave me to run after the customer wanted the differential replaced under warantee.

Looks like he did some driving through streams or something, as the sodium and dirt killed it. Not to mention it has 30% water.

Sometimes even a breather is not enough. Drive a hot axle into a cold stream, it inhales as it cools. Sometimes faster than the breather can deal with and it will suck in oil through the axle and pinion seals. And then there are axles with worn or poorly designed (non double -ip) seals that can keep the oil in but not hold the water out. That's why you need to check regularly if you get into water often.
 
I constantly tell people to extend the breathers with rubber tubes, and always have it checked at least at every oil change. I've got a dozen or so similar.
