Camry sells, yes it does. What about Corollas and the Nissan and KIA offerings? LThat's a lot of sales to not be competing for.

I'm over sedans, there's no advantage any longer. CUVs have similar gas mileage, higher ride height, wagon utility. The only thing sedans have going for them is they're cheaper, and that's because everyone wants a crossover.

I could see myself in a big luxo-cruiser like an XTS though.

News on the side; GovMo finds itself in a pickle trying to figure out what to do with their lineup after the Ford news.

The news article is on the left hand side of the page below the graph.

I'm not liking this news but on the face, it makes a little sense.

It sells in a dying market:

Small cars you say? Here's 2017:
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2018/01/small-car-sales-in-america-december-2017-and-2017-year-end/

Nearly everyone was down in sales.

You're also assuming people will look at those small econoboxes and not cross shop the "roomier" Crossover that gets nearly the same MPG.

Time will tell - I'm not sold on the idea but it does have merit - pivot to what is hot and become a leader in that space.

I always liked the Fiesta and Taurus.

Hasn't GM hinted that all those + the Impala may be going too?

yes they have. the Volt too..

There is nothing special about a "Ford" car, Lincoln has the cars I want, so buy a Lincoln, and save that Ford badge for the Trucks and towing vehicles.

that's the part of the story you're Missing..all the Lincoln Models are based on shared Ford Designs.
When the Ford Sedans/etc go away, so do their Lincoln counterparts.
MKZ=Fusion, MKX=Edge, MKT=Flex/Explorer, MKC=Escape, MKS=(6th gen)Taurus, Navigator=Expedition, Continental=7thGen Taurus(Currently on sale in China, basically a Fusion with a 3" Stretch)
also the crossovers in that list are built on car derived platforms-

MKX/Edge are on the cd3/cd4 platform of the MKZ/Fusion/Mondeo/Continental
MKT/Flex/Explorer on the D4 variant of the D3 Platform of the Taurus(itself based on the Volvo P2 Architecture)
MKC/Escape on the C1 Platform of the Focus/C-max/Transit Connect/Volvo V40

and they had already been discussing axing the Continental because of slow sales.
They haven't made/developed a standalone Lincoln design in a long time...

That's what most People think the "Focus Active" they mentioned is..

then other part of this is, this "consolidation" is for the North American Models only. most have counterparts built outside North America that could certainly be imported should the Need arise to "reintroduce" them...

They are toast if they follow through on these plans.

The Taurus from 2010 on is a piece of blank. Big body but no room inside.

I loved my 2002 Taurus.

It is a sad announcement, I'd take a fusion over any car (or truck) in your signature (cavalier, impala, Colorado?)

Jesus, I thought Ford was on track a few years back but this is just a mess. I seriously thought it was a Onion headline when I read it.

Amen, sir. You are tuned in.

At least Mustang is staying put, sedan models have come and gone over the years, they will introduce another line in the next couple of years.

Care to wager?

I'd think they would keep a small car.

Larger cars intrinsically share platforms with car-based SUVs. Perhaps mustang chassis and drivetrain could be lengthened to make a rwd, v8 Lincoln.

But a small, economical vehicle like the focus, is still a niche that should be kept.

I get it that Ford won't be likely to have a best of class or even top 3 given what Honda, Toyota and GM are making for mid and larger sedans. But small cars from all of them are hit and miss, and all have their lousy points.

I do not believe that for a single second. The article quoted THREE ANONYMOUS people.

You could quote three people from my staff and they would not have the entire big picture.

I would take anything from the NYT with a 50 pound bag of salt.
