Ford vs. GM Reliability

I'm a chevy guy and i would never even think of owning a truck that wasn't a chevy or a GMC. But as far as cars go i am very dissapointed with Gm's 60 degree V6 engine, those engines are [censored] and have nothing but problems. I have a 2000 crown victoria with a real V8 engine and rear wheel drive! The cars are durable and the engines are even tougher. Just last week i stopped in at a gas station to grab something to drink and find a huge oil spill under my car to find out that the oil cooler hoses had let go and i lost all my motor oil. After removing the police oil cooler completely and replacing the oil the car sounds just fine and runs like it always did! I have always like the ford 4.6L engines and all the ford modular engines for that matter.

Just to chime in on this thread from the experience of friends and family, I've seen a lot of good experiences with Ford vehicles...

Dad had a 1967 Mustang (289) that he bought in 1970 w/9k miles on it. Drove it 'till 1978 and about 150k miles. Rust wrecked the body, but apparently the motor still ran great. This is what I've been told.

He replaced it with a 1978 Chevrolet Malibu Wagon (305) that he had NOTHING but problems with. Within the first year, it had a new tranny and a new paint job; and by the end, it ran on about 5 cylinders, and dieseled for about 5 minutes at shut-off.

My mom and step-father later on bought a 1994 Ford Temp 2.3 brand-new, one of the last ones on the lot. They drove it for 8 years and about 110k miles, and except for a minor tranny problem at about 6 years old, it ran very well the whole time. Body help up well, too. I was suprised.

A buddy of mine bought a 1998 Escort ZX-2 when it was a year old and had 25k miles on it. He drove the absolute [censored] out of it for 10 years and 100k miles, and it ran well right to the end.

From personal experience, I have to admit I've never owned a Ford, but I had a 1985 Buick Skyhawk that was absolute junk, yet I now drive a 2002 Cavalier that has been pretty reliable.

Overall, I think Ford makes good quality vehicles, and I think the new Fusion is a great vehicle. I think Ford is going to do very well in the coming years. It was a very, very smart move of them to distance themself from the whle bailout mess, i think that will help them a lot....

Seriously either your assessment is dishonest or you lack some reading comprehension skills. It had a aftermarket oil cooler added during police fleet use that failed at the hose connections. How is the install and maintenance of an aftermarket component relevant?

If the reliability is great on Fusion.....that car may finally dig Ford out of the "north american car" conundrum.

+1 on staying out of the bailout......

I'm well aware of the circumstances. I'm merely laughing at the situation. How reliable would that car be judged if someone hadn't decided to stop at that exact moment for a 97 ounce super duper thurstbuster, aftermarket or not?

actually the police oil cooler is factory, and them leaking is somewhat common, especially with high miles.

Lol, I was just making a joke regarding the circumstances of that post. I'm sure Crown Vics are the Swiss watches of the automotive world. It just seemed funny to see someone comment about how reliable their car was in the same breath that they mention randomly losing a crankcase full of oil.

Agreed. Regardless of the car being mentioned, it was funny. I just can't imagine the mess that was left in the parking lot, lol.

Those oil cooler hoses were replaced by me about 3 months before this happened as they were starting to leak anyway (the pinch bolt that held the cooler hoses in place was probably made for 2 cents in china and that would explain why it snapped!). But the oil cooler was stock because the car was a police interceptor. I ended up ditching the oil cooler setup and replaced the oil filter adapter with one that did not have provisions for an oil cooler so i dont have to worry about another incident like that and my car still runs like it always has even after running with no oil. So i would say that that is one [censored] of an engine to start right back up after running with no oil and running as smooth as ever so that is why i would call it reliable. And im still driving it like i stole it with no problems yet!

It was a huge mess and i only made it worse when i added 3 qts. trying to get it home when it just shot it all over the parking lot. All i can say is that im glad it happened there and not in my driveway.

Well, with the exception of a noisy power steering pump, my focus has had exactly zero problems in 6,000 miles of owning it.

In 8 years/70,000 miles of ownership, the Expedition has had...

-Fuel Pump (60k miles)
-Rear Blower Door motor (58k)
-Driver Power seat electrical harness- (20k)
-Alternator (2k)
-3/8 Ignition coils (Between 35-45k miles)

At 105k so far the Escape has only needed 2 things since 32k. Something in the front belt latches and the cruise control cable broke somehow. $50 for the first one and the cc cable just a couple wire tie's. I could say basically same thing about the 98 Escort, 00 F150 and 06 Ranger I had. A few small things over the years nothing major. My dad's Festiva with 217k nothing.. if you consider the clutch, lower ball joints tie rods etc wear items. Probably didn't need to be done better safe than sorry. But my mom's Ponitac Vibe (toyota I know) with 98k nothing as far as I know.

Now on with the Chevy's I could write a book. My wife won't own them with the Prism she had and with me it was the S15. Never could get the engine light to stay off always something! The parents Impala before this had the gasket Dexcool problem. Struts went out and transmission toward the end. My grandparents had a Aveo for 2 weeks and the column locked up on them twice. The first time they replaced the column the second time wasn't even a day later they had it towed back and said keep it. Chevy's don't have a good track record in our family. About the same as Dodge's and transmission's. My dad would like to stick to Chevy's since his first car was 60's Chevy Impala bubble top. Their looking at Ford's to replace the Vibe soon.. really like our Escape.
