Does anyone know what's covered under Ford's 5/60 airbag/restraint warranty. Truck has 46K on it and the airbag light came on. I took it to the stealership and they said it had a bad wire somewhere along the way to the right crash sensor. They never found the actual break. They also said wires aren't covered so they wanted to charge me $300 to run a wire directly to the sensor. The warranty guide doesn't say anything about wires not being covered in the special airbag restraint coverage. It also doesn't say what's covered.

I know I'm done buying anything with a 3/36 bumper to bumper.

Unless someone on here works for a Ford dealership and can clarify what's covered, I would call Ford's 800 customer service number and see what they have to say.

I'm going to call them tomorrow. I was screwing around with the stealership all day.

Was hoping someone has had some personal experience with this or similar.

If the dealership has a question about whether a part is covered, they just go into Ford's dealer website and type the part number and your VIN and mileage into a form. Then the website spits out what warranty, if any, is applicable. (I'd imagine that your problem is that the wire is part of the body wire harness, which isn't covered under the restraint warranty.)

If you want clarification from Ford, call 800-392-FORD. This is Ford's Customer Relationship Center. This will basically start a 3-way conversation between Ford, you, and the dealership's service manager.

I know one thing. I don't like being held over a barrel. Dude wouldn't say much early about what's covered. Then later he was threatening to start charging by the hour to find the problem. I'm about ready to restore the old 84 Chevy in the garage and never ever have to worry with a dealer. They have you cornered. You need to use dealer because it may be under warranty, but maybe not.

They at least list the covered components of the power train.

(2) Your vehicle’s safety belts and air bag Supplemental Restraint System
(SRS) are covered for an extended Safety Restraint Coverage Period,
which lasts for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

That tells us nothing.

The wiring harnesses and wiring shouldn't break under normal usage.

I guess I'm doing better than the boy I was talking to this morning at the stealer. He brought his 11 6.7 in for a check engine light a couple months ago. They said it was the DEF pump, not covered under power train. Out like $700 I think he said. Poor guy was back in with a check engine light. No idea how that turned out. He said if it was anything to do with DEF the system was coming off.

but ford's position will be that you tapped something with the bumper, flexing/ breaking the loom to that sensor. my guess.

Yup. Its very vague and they should at least list what's covered like they do for the powertrain. And I agree the harness should not fail in normal use.

Hyundai and Kia has a much better warranty i think it is 5 year 60,000 mile and 10 year 100,000 mile on the eng and trans. The wiring should be part of it but im not 100% sure..

Just because it shouldn't break doesn't mean it will not. When you look at the multitudes of parts in a vehicle, to me it's amazing more things don't break.

Clearly a defective part or design to break in
I could see the wiring under the seats or door jambs since they're moving and possibly under stress. A harness that just sits there should be pretty bulletproof.

Wiring can easily be damaged by body work, rodents, parts replacement-maintainence work etc. they will want to charge you until they can prove to Ford that's it's a factory defect. If it's rodent damage & you have full coverage, your auto insurance will cover the repairs

I just replaced the entire body wiring harness for rats eating the airbag wiring & due to safety reasons Toyota/Lexus won't allow wiring repairs on airbag circuits. Only harness replacements

It certainly wasn't from damage or repairs. Under-hood is 100% stock and unaltered. Only thing ever done to the truck is oil changes, air filter change, and fluid level inspection or top off. Not so much as a spark plug wire has been fooled with. No rodent damage was noted anywhere and supposedly the guy went over everything.

I'm 50% convinced if I unhooked and reconnected all connectors the problem would resolve itself. Of course the truck may not run either.

I also wasn't impressed with the suggested fix. Guess I think like Toyota.
