I drive a 2001 GMC Safari AWD at work with the same engine. I got it with 43 miles on it...now has 105,000 and I've been the only driver. I drive conservatively and still only manage an average of 15 MPG...the best it EVER got was 17 on the highway. It's a great small van that marches through snow like a boss, but it gets abysmal fuel mileage.

as far as the engines go they are strong and durable. Be prepared to do exhaust manifolds, coils, possibly intake manifold. I have never seen one die yet, and we have some customers that are terrible with maintenance. I'd be more concerned with transmission issues and front end parts on that van than engine issues.
