(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co and U.S. safety regulators have agreed to a greatly expanded recall of the best-selling vehicle in North America, the Ford F-150 pickup truck, the regulators said on Thursday.

The expanded recall is for a possible short-circuit that could cause airbags to deploy unexpectedly, and involves nearly 1.2 million F-150 pickup trucks and 16,000 Lincoln Mark LT vehicles, said the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This is in addition to a previous recall of 144,000 Ford F-150 trucks, bringing the total for this issue to 1.33 million vehicles, NHTSA said.

F-150 is the primary model of the F-series pickup trucks, the best-selling vehicles in North America for the past 34 years. Pickup trucks and SUVs generally create more profit for automakers than do smaller cars.

Ford said it knows of no crashes or injuries caused by the issue. It will begin notifying vehicle owners in May to bring the pickup trucks or Lincolns into dealers for repair at no cost. Repairs will take less than half a day, Ford said.

But owners are asked to bring in their vehicles right away if their airbag warning light is illuminated, Ford said. If the light is ignored, in some circumstances, the driver's side front airbag could deploy unexpectedly.

Ford said the airbag warning typically is illuminated for "an extended period" before the driver's side front airbag surprises a driver by deploying. Drivers should have time to safely take the vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln/Mercury dealer if they do so when the warning signal is first lit, Ford said.

Ford said its field data indicates that drivers have maintained control of their vehicles if the front side airbag deploys.

Overall, the recall affects 1.32 million trucks from the model years 2004 to 2006.

A mistake in the assembly of the vehicles could cause an airbag wire in the steering wheel to short-circuit, Ford and NHTSA said.

The expansion comes after talks between the automaker and safety regulators in Washington.

"We are pleased that Ford shares our commitment to safety and is taking action to protect consumers by expanding its safety recall," said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland in a statement.

In February, Ford said in a response to safety regulators, "the condition does not present an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety" but agreed to the recall of 144,000 F-150s.

On Thursday, Ford said it held to its previous statement that the issue is not an "unreasonable risk," but agreed to the expanded recall "to reassure customers of Ford's commitment to safety and to eliminate any possible customer confusion."

Ford cooperated during the study of the airbag issue throughout the process, NHTSA said.

Ford shares were down 2 percent at $14.67 on Thursday morning, compared with a drop of 0.4 percent in the S&P 500 index.

That's a lot of airbags, 1.3 million.

I haven't heard a whisper of it on the news either.

I saw it on Fox News about 8:00 AM this morning, but paid little attention since I do not drive an F-150.

Exactly my point. Where does the double stndard end?Emagine who you voted for.(Last comment For the leftist only.).I'll probably be banned for this.Hopefully for the Moderators, this is a 'one-off' comment, not a track record.

I wonder how many have ACTUALLY deployed unexpectedly? That may be the reason.

Well I can almost understand why Toyota would take more flak for having problems than Ford. Toyota and its owners tout most dependable constantly. What I don't get is why GM gets more flak than Ford. And it's not because of the bail outs because it's been this way years before all that. Maybe it's because GM was the biggest, but now Toyota is. Maybe that's another reason.

To tell you the truth I'm a little surprised that Toyota would take flak since just about all Japanese cars are touted as most dependable and any problems they have gets swept under the rug by the media and their fans and it's been that way for a long time. Now Hyundai/kia is gettting the same special treatment. There were plenty of people defending Toyota rightly or wrongly tough, so i wouyldn't feel to bad for Toyota.

I know for a fact that the older Ford airbag systems, like that used on my '97 Crown Vic, will blow the airbag fuse if any wires short to ground. The module is actually programmed to blow the fuse when it detects an error condition that could result in airbag deployment. Once the airbag fuse is blown, the airbags will not deploy and the warning light stays on.

Simple...

Had Ford not known how to fix or how to identify the problem, as in Toyota's case, and had there been deaths associated with the problem then it would be all over the news.

No deaths, half a day repair, not sensational enough.

How on earth can you compare the Toyota recall to the Ford recall..I always thought you were a smart intelligent person FL_Rob..But you proved me wrong big time.

Do you hate Ford that much Fl_Rob?..I see no other explanation as why you got your panties in a wad over this other then hating Ford.

To answer the question about how many Ford airbags have gone off, when Ford recalled the first 144,000 trucks back in 2009, it did so after receiving reports of 238 airbags deploying. According to this article, the NHTSA pressured Ford into recalling the remainder of the 1.2 million now involved.

why do you feel the need to make this comment at all? Your comment is moronic.

What on earth does "who you voted for" have to do with the media response to this recall?? Yes, yet again it's all a pro-union gub'ment conspiracy...

Maybe the fact that there were no injuries had something to do with it?? Stuff catching fire and people dying are big news-worthy events. So, evidently is a single incident of a steering wheel falling off (shouldn't the gub'ment have covered this up??).

Grow up.

I was shooting the breeze with a buddy from grade school and we got to talking about cars
and he mentioned that his 2003 F150 blew its airbag as he was backing up out of his driveway two days ago to go to work.

He told me about an F150 forum that he's a member of that has several stories of the airbags going off while driving.

This guys airbag went off back on Dec. 27, 2006 on his 2002 F150.

F150.net

And it seems it's not just limited to the F150 but from a 2004 Eddie Bauer Expedition and a 2007 Focus.

Premature Airbag Deployment in Expedition and Focus

I don't care if it's a domestic or foreign make
but in the end we are the ones at the receiving end of the manufacturers' irresponsible-nature
to deny fault (until the NHTSA gets involved) to protect their pride and profits regardless of injury/death.

Interesting story with the Focus. If the side of the vehicle indeed had body work done (such as from a previous event), it's possible that the wiring to the airbags was chaffed and shorted.

Exactly. In the Toyota case there was an entire family killed and a horrifying 911 call including when they crashed and died.

If the F-150 situation had anything like that, it would be all over the news.

Do you actually know the real story of the family that was killed?
