Ford Mercon vs Ford Mercon V transmission Fluid??

Well I called the dealership, they use it for xfer case fills, F150 forum majority uses it, explorerforum.com uses it...It drives fine. My guess is they didn't want to make Mercon anymore, and selling something other than Mercon V puts money in the pocket at an inflated price. Its staying in, not much left in the way of Mercon anyways...

IIRC Mercon V has more aggressive friction modifiers than Mercon, which makes the fluid for lack of a better term more slippery. That being said I don't Mercon V is quiet like ATF+4 and odds are you should be ok.

IMHO I prefer Dex/Merc fluids in my application (4r100) just cause that is what the trans was designed to run on and it is cheaper.

My guess is that Ford knows there are better fluids than plain old ATF, and has finally started to recommend a product that is more suited for the application.

As for listening to lubricant advice from Exlorerforum.com or any other Internet site, do so at your peril. They really don't know

bccardinal works at a Ford store, so knows what he says....

I think my boss might object to that. But really it might be fine, really don't know. Like I said before, we do what the mother ship (Dearborn) commands.

if its a borg warner 1356 case from 1987 to 1996 it takes mercon. since they dont make mercon anymore i think about five years ago you need to put mercon v in it cause that is ok to run in place of the regular stuff. I have the 1356 in a 1994 f-150 and i have done two mercon v changes so far. The 1356 spins with it in any mode 2 or 4 or 4lo so i would have noticed it a while ago if it were wrong. by the way if u have a mzda 5-speed it takes the same fluid just did that with the same mobil super multi vehicle atf. Shifts like a dream now and the fluid that came out looked new. let me check my book for an 04 ranger and ill tell u whats up.

Yep as i suspected the 04 ranger calls for a mercon which mercon v is the only choice and the trans is a mercon v as well. For dwcopple the vehicle you put the merc v in. if its the mountaineer it takes mercon the same as the ranger so merc v is all good. if it was a 08 it would take special ford fluid. so merc v is the substitute for merc which is not made since 07.

Based on my old 06 Ranger which had the same trans I wouldn't use anything but Mercon. Otherwise it seemed notchy. RP's sycnhromax was good for a while but it came out like water in 20k.
