Ford Halts Lightning Production for Battery Issues

The automaker on Tuesday announced that it had stopped building and shipping the full-size truck due to a potential "battery issue" that occurred during the pre-delivery quality inspection process and on Wednesday clarified that a fire was involved.

The fire occurred in a company lot in Dearborn, Michigan, where the truck was being held before shipping, according to Reuters, and spread to a nearby truck.

A Ford spokeswoman told FOX Business that the company believes it has identified the root cause of the problem and that the investigation should be completed by the end of this week, but that it could be several weeks before production restarts.

I'm just surprised there have not been manufacturing plants burning as well as dealerships.
I just can't see anyone parking any EV in a building they care about. Maybe dealers will have special fire proof booths to work on EV's in?

From what I see... not a big issue. Local Ford dealer has two that are just sitting and sitting on the lot, unsold.
Very true
My local Ford dealer has a lighting truck that’s been on the showroom for a long time
Nobody willing to pay the cost nor is there a demand for such a vehicle

Why would you opine this? EV's are safer than gas cars when it comes to likelihood of fires. Why are you surprised that safer technology is...safer? The fact that you are tells me the propaganda is strong!

That may be true, but they're a tough fire to put out. We just had another fatality on L.I. this past Friday, with a Ford Explorer and a 2023 Tesla. According to local news "Investigators say it's not clear what sparked the fire in the Tesla or if it was already on fire when it collided with a 2020 Ford Explorer." The local paper said it took three fire companies to put it out, and a long time. A total of 4 people in the two vehicles died. Prayers sent to the victims and their families.

What's interesting is they aren't sure if the Tesla was on fire before crashing, the investigation will figure that out. I'm not looking for an argument from the EV proponents, I'm just sighting a recent accident involving a fire. The technology might be safer, but there are millions and millions more ICE vehicles on the road so the odds of one of them being involved in a fire is greater, and they are still a lot easier to put out.

Im more worried about crash worthiness than I am about fires, to be honest. Really though, a heart attack is a lot more likely way to check out. Really EV or vehicle fires in general just aren't on my radar.

I agree, but I don't see them as that crash worthy either. Especially when a crash can result in a very bad fire that can be much more problematic than an ICE fire to put out.

When you're trapped in the car, a fire is a fire is a fire, and ICE is more likely to do that. As to crash worthiness, they're excellent. Tesla's crash test data with IIHS/NHTSA and NCAP show this, as do the rest, EV6, etc.

Tell that to the families who lost loved ones, and the fireman that had a very hard time putting out the fire. Difficult to put out when they burn seems to be the norm.

Okay, you go talk to these families, I'll go talk to those.

This is a long thread and I didnt read all of it but I assume someone already mentioned the Ford Battery Issue has been solved and production expected to resume in a couple weeks, a week has already passed.
Not expecting a recall of already sold pickups. Pretty much sounded like a production issue meaning the issue took place literally on the assembly line or right after, something to that nature.

But now we have another, as of 02/20/2023 =
"The problem – which can prevent the Ford F-150 Lightning from shifting into drive or cause it to gradually lose power while driving – is believed to affect around 100 total vehicles, though it’s possible that more could be impacted as well. The issue was discovered through vehicle data monitoring, which alerts the automaker when a problem surfaces.

“We monitor vehicle data to help ensure our vehicles are performing as expected in the field. We have identified that (in) some vehicles, their high-voltage battery is not performing as intended, which could result in a performance degradation,” said Ford Model e Customer Experience Communications Director Martin Gunsberg. “In this case, a driver may receive an alert in the vehicle through a message display system on the dashboard, and the vehicle will begin to reduce power to allow the customer to drive to a safe location.”"

I just have no faith in Ford's quality, and expect EV's to be a big challenge for them, to be blunt.

Just like my chevy is better than your ford argument. Sorry just do the study. Lithium Ion battery's are very dangerous. A ship with electric cars burned at sea a year or so ago because of Li battery car fires. A 747 was brought out of the sky some years ago by them. And is why they are now not allowed to be shipped by air. It was a few weeks ago a plane was forced to land because someones lap top battery blew up.
The propaganda is from the ones saying how safe and wonderful they are. I could post link after link of how hazardous Li battery's are.

I must say I agree! I think they're going to burn up a lot of money trying to get it right, and PO a lot of customers in the process.

Not really. Empirically, Ford isnt so good. Bad quality. Batteries are fine. Of course they can faul just like anything else. Heres a plane earlier this month that caught fire and had to land. Had nothing to do with a battery...so can we just admit planes are unsafe and Big Oil is the reason they exist? Just pushing their fuel consuming agenda, huh? #EverythingIsAConspiracy

Yeah, only time will tell for sure. Ford is #3 in USA sales for 2022 but it's close, maybe they will still find a place in the top 5 or so if they dont get it together. It will be tough, USA union labor isnt cheap and all fighting for a limited EV market, still lots unknown but competition will be fierce and I think leading to an oversupply. We are still five years out from any normalization of the market.
I think some smart companies AKA GM, TOYOTA Possibly Ford could benefit by maintaining a competitive ICE market, current EV technology will not win over the majority so that still leaves at least 50% and more of the market in the coming decade.
