Hi all,

Any third gen Ford Escape owners here? Interested in a 16 Ford Escape 2.0 4WD titanium model. What's your opinion on the 2.0 Ecoboost engine longevity? Thanks

My parents have a 2016 SE 4wd with the 1.6 Ecoboost. They had a used engine installed after it grenaded itself on the highway with no warning around 100k. It’s currently parked at 133k with a bad transmission. A Ford dealer quoted them $7,500 for a rebuilt. It’s had plenty of other issues as well.

Does the 2.0 use a different transmission it has considerably more power?
they were 6 speed autos.

Other than the power increase, what makes it better than the 1.6?

The 1.6L version have a lot of coolant intrusion issues that the 2.0L doesn't have nearly as much, even though they have the same bad design (depending on the year). The 2.0L is a good engine if made before a certain year, and if made after sometime in 2019. I have a 2.0 for 2018 model year at around 106K miles and it's been fine so far. If I ever have the issue, I will just replace the head gasket.

Great Information

I believe that generation have the 6F35 transmission.

That's what you want to avoid. 2.0 Ecoboosts are nice engines. But the transmission and PDU to which it's attached are glass. I don't believe they were above the rated torque of the transmission in 2016, but in the Mavericks and newer Escape/Bronco, the 2.0 puts out more torque than the 8F35 is actually rated for ...

the trick is to determine WHICH 2.0 EB it has... sometime in '15 they started making them in Cleveland, with a redesign, and those are the ones with issues...

if it's a 2.0 from Valencia Spain, it's a great engine. no worries.
If it's a 2.0 from Cleveland, it has the same propensity for coolant intrusion issues as the smaller, and newer engines.
Dad's 2015 has the Spanish engine, no worries. the '17 my brother had for a while, was starting to sip coolant when he traded it in. the '18 my nephews wife had started to loose Coolant, they found a local shop that would do the headgasket ( for $4k) they paid it, and traded that ticking time bomb in...
( $4k for a headgasket??? they found the ONLY indie shop in the area that would even Touch it.)

Pull the plastic beauty cover off the engine, and on the passenger side of the Valve Cover, just above the Motor mount there should be a Decal saying where it was made...

yes, those have the 6f35, not the powershift. That Turd was only in the Focus.

Why do transmissions cost more than the value of the vehicle? I'm dealing with this on my neon, trying to figure out what to do. A rebuild kit is $150-$300 yet places are asking $1700-$2500 for a rebuilt transmission not including $1k for the installation.

How many transmissions have you rebuilt?
