Hi.. I tried searching BITOG but didn't come up with what I was looking for.
My buddy attacked his in-laws 98 Town Car spark plugs with the 4.6L. the plugs were in for 5 yrs, no anti-seize..
well 1 coil pack fell apart, which was what he suspected, and as he jammed on the spark plug, it came out in 1 piece, along with the threads!

I was hoping that TSB from Ford (that I forgot to save) will help him get an idea of what he needs to do to properly remove the plugs and what to do when the threads get stripped.

Thank you!

found the document in one try. It sounds like he is screwed if he stripped one out. Helicoil is the only answer. I had a shop do that to my friends explorer. they spent 2 days fixing it.Then the idiots put in champion plugs. It ran like [censored] until we changed them out to autolites. Same with my ranger that someone put bosch plugs in it. spark knocked till I couldn't stand it and changed mine to autolite.
Moral of story. Change plugs. put in o.e.m. or equal plugs . Use anti-seize every time. problem prevented.

oh yeah, get a can of p.b. blaster . i bought a gallon and use a small spray bottle because it doesn't spray everywhere like the cans do. . use that instead of ford carb cleaner in the plug holes before removal. Back them out a quarter turn and spray it in. Let it sit over night , then wiggle the plugs out gently back and forth. it works much faster/ better.

The plugs in the town car are very different than the 5.4 3v plugs.

The plugs you speak of fly out of the head. You can't get the 5.4 3v plugs out.

Helicoils are a hit and miss in these applications,i wouldn't use one in my engine for this problem.Use the correct tool.

That TSB does not apply to the OPs concern. That is for a 3v motor, not a 2v which is a completely different animal.

A 98 town car did not have a 3v motor. For correct info see my earlier post.

I know, believe me, I know probably more than almost anyone else here. Notice my job in my sig. He posted up a TSB for plugs on a 3v motor.
