... you should have no worries about your car going forever. I had a 2002 WRX come into work today for an oil change. Thing had 420,000 miles on it! Older couple were the owners, told me they bought it brand new and have used it to travel around the country since. Also said the only maintenance that has been done is the timing belt and water pump once plus oil changes every 3 months. Sure the motor sounded like [censored] and it was leaking from every seal possible, but I was amazed that thing was still chugging along and apparently passes smog! Even had tags for 2012!

Wow... 420k on a WRX? If their turbo and (I assume) auto transmission are original that's amazing.

My wife's 2000 outback wagon would have gone past a quarter million miles but she decided to drive another 6 miles after loosing all the coolant.

Also have to wonder just how long that engine would keep on going if they had it resealed and had the valves adjusted.

I assume at least a few of them would have to be out of spec after 420,000 miles.

Hope mine goes for that long.

And it should be on it's 4th timing belt by now...asking for trouble if they are only changing it at 200k. Interference engines are annoying like that.

I like hearing/reading those high mile usage. If it's an 02 with that many miles, makes me wonder that if they spend that much time in it - wonder why they don't have something for roomy comfort - perhaps a diesel pusher for those who like to spend a lot of time on the road, conversion van, tuck w/cab over, or go Amtrack if one can't keep up on maintenance.
Still - 400K+ leaky sub par maintenance is pretty good.

Makes a big difference if the vehical is used for trips on the highway VS one mainly used in the city . It's likely the fact this one has seen mainly hwy use that it's got the milage on it and is still running pretty good .

IIRC that might have the old 2.0 and not the 2.5 engine. HG failures are pretty rare on the 2.0, 2.2, and 3.0 boxer engines.

Wrong motor.

They are available in automatics and dreadful as rubber band power curve of the 2.0T does not work well with a hesitant automatic.

I own the similar car(2004 WRX w/2.0L) and cannot fathom 420k in it. It is fun but a tin can at best as far as creature comfort/ride.

Even though the engine is turbo for US sales they detuned it to meet ULEV standards. In Japan/Europe the similar engine achieved 286HP-300HP vs the 227HP domestically. I never did it but about $1000-$1500 in replacing exhaust and gutting cat material out of downpipe/uppipe to turbo gets you easily to the 286HP+ levels with a tune.
