For those who think conventionals = synthetics...

If you were offed 10LBS of hamburger or a 10 Lb prime rib, which would you choose?

I'm a simple guy,i would take the ST over Mobil1, synthetic oil is nothing more to me than formulary drugs as compared to generic equivalent. For the record i also prefer quality ground beef to prime rib. No kidding!

So: ST CONVENTIONAL or Mobil 1. Both FREE. Which would you honestly choose.

I'd definitely have to go with the Mobil 1, as Subaru says I need to use synthetic in my FXT.

Our OM says: "5W-30 synthetic oil is required for optimum engine performance and protection. Conventional oil may be used if synthetic oil is unavailable. If 5W-30 synthetic oil is not available, 5W-30 or 5W-40 conventional oil may be used if replenishment is needed but should be changed to 5W-30 synthetic oil at the next oil change."

I understand your point, but there's wiggle room in these words, should something come up during a warranty claim. If I had a warranty issue that might involve an oil-related failure AND I had decided to use a quality mineral oil (I would never use mineral oil in a turbo Subie), you'd bet your butt I'd be sending out multiple samples to different oil analyzers AND keeping a large quantity of sampled oil from the sump to cover my butt, since it's likely that a quality 5W-30 will protect just as well, if not better, than the cheapest "5W-30 synthetic..."

To the OP: what is the point of this thread? There will be absolutely zero people who would choose ST conventional over M1, if either choice would be free. What does that prove? Why not make it a LITTLE more fair and ask whether people would choose ST SYNTHETIC or Pennzoil conventional (PYB)? I bet the answer might be similar, but there might at least be a few who would choose PYB over ST synthetic.

Would I rather have a Chevy Cruze or a Lexus ES?

LOL exactly...

I like the specs answer personally...two oils in plain containers, list of OEM approvals on the front.

I've used ST a lot and never had a problem. But, if the oil was given to me, I'd take the M1 for the consistency. ST is blended by different manufactures from time to time.

If you had 10 jugs ST conventional and 10 jugs of Mobil 1 and said I had to choose for free, I would choose the Mobil 1.

Now if you said I could have either 10 jugs of ST conventional or 5 jugs of Mobil 1, I would take the ST.

I wouldn't take either one, except maybe to sell them (I'd get more for the M1 ...). I have had cold start rattles with M1 on every motor I have tried it one. Granted, they all had over 100K on the ODO. But all my vehicles except the bike have over 100K

If you make it a three way choice and include Maxlife blend (red jug), I'll take that hands down and actually use it. Or Delo, or Chevron Supreme, or Rotella T6, or QS in most flavors. You get the idea

Burger. I don't care for prime rib, or as I refer to it, prime fat. Hadn't eaten prime rib is a couple decades. Decided to give it a try a few weeks ago when we went out to a buffet with a couple of friends at a local casino. Couldn't get past a couple of bites. I am firmly convinced I will never give it another try in this life.

I will say a great ground round burger is really really great. I'm with you on this part TiredTrucker.

What's the point of this?
Who would choose some store brand oil blended to meet a bottom dollar price over a premier synthetic branded oil?
There is a reason that M1 is generally well regarded in all of its many flavors and it isn't simply advertising and promotion.
There's also a reason that ST is cheap at regular retail and it isn't simply because it lacks advertising and promotion.
You do get what you pay for when you buy motor oil as with anything else.
The value proposition comes in for those bright enough to figure out that M1 AMIR is cheaper than ST ever gets.
Better quality at a better price?
I'll take it.
For free?
A question that nobody should get wrong, although some above did.
