We switched to using the CharBroil Big Easy infrared thing several years back. So much easier to deal with, and with the price of peanut oil these days a whole lot cheaper, even if you freeze your oil between uses.

I used to deep fry 2 to 4 turkeys a year. I have usedthe engine hoist before as a joke. Works. I have not done one in a few years a picked up a Char-broil propane air fryer. No mess and it taste just as good, takes about just as long and you can cook up to a 20lbs bird in it.

I love mine. I have done all sorts of stuff in it and I can take it camping!

This is what I've used for the last couple of years. Fully electric, so you don't have to worry about your propane jug. It still deep fries them, if you have to go the deep-fried route and it uses a lot less oil, probably 4-5 quarts doing a turkey. I figure I've paid for it several times over with the savings in oil. One disadvantage to it (really miniscule), is that oven twine is needed to keep the wings and the legs together. The twin is cheap.
You definitely don't want it if you have to have the genuine fire underneath your cooked bird.
Seems like Menards throws these things on sale for under $100 every November.
