Yea it's useable, slightly better than the oil dipstick tube. After driving around with the Amsoil ATF, the transmission has been shifting really quick and smooth.
Thanks. I wonder if the AMSOIL ATF is a lower viscosity than Matic J. After some more searching, I found what appears to be a credible source that states that Castrol Transmax J and IDEMITSU ATF HP are suitable direct replacements for Nissan Matic J. It looks like the only outlets are Subaru and Mitsubishi dealers though.
On the back of the Amsoil ATF bottles it says it's suitable for Nissan J Matic.
This member is selling Matic-J. He's offering it for a fraction of what your dealer would charge you.

I would be all over that as well if I didn't just do the Amsoil ATF flush.
I need to do a flush on a 2003.5 G35 with 77,000 on the original fluid (I believe).
Three questions:
1. Will a 2003.5 have a dipstick?
2. Where is the dipstick located?
3. What tools will I need to remove the transmission lines headed to the heat exchanger?

1. I don't know. My 2003 didn't have one.
2. It's just behind the firewall for your engine on the passenger side. You will see the transmission fluid fill tube with a small black knob handle. It is safety screwed to the fill tube. You will need a 10MM? socket with extension to unscrew it. Be careful not to drop the screw while retrieving it. Now, you can pull what will either be a plug or a dipstick out of the fill tube.
3. I would recommend a complete flush with that many miles on your fluid. Make sure the tech cleans out the machine thoroughly before flushing the Matic J.
If you need a dipstick, give these folks a call (part is not listed on website). They were very helpful. I think I paid $16 to have one sent to me.

Lots of substitutes can be used in place of J-matic. Don't be brainwashed into thinking that OE fluid is the only choice.
Pennzoil, Amalie, Amsoil, Idemtisu, Castrol, RoyalPurple, Schaeffers....as well as a bunch of other companies, make equivalents.
J-matic is simple HMF'd for smoother shifts and TC cycling, along with being a blend for more consistent all temp performance. At the dealer price, I would avoid.

Thanks Undummy. I decided to stay with the J matic until 100K miles (30K miles on this fill) for extended warranty purposes. My mechanic ordered it for me from a Nissan dealership, so I was able to pick it up for $8.25/qt. That was much more palatable than the $11.48/qt that they wanted to charge me just coming off the street!
Are you familiar with Schaeffers #204SAT? I can't tell from their literature whether it meets J matic requirements specifically. This fluid has been a wonder drug for my 2000 Tundra (DEX II/III).

I found the Subaru 5 speed automatic transmissions take Matic-J, same as Infiniti. It is made my Idematsu. I copied this from a Subaru forum.
"The Castrol and Pennzoil fluids are sold only in Japan and Australia, and Idemitsu is the OEM supplier for Subaru and Nissan (whose division, JATCO manufactures the 5EAT)."
"Matic-J fluid (the type the LGT requires) is only available currently in North America at Nissan or Subaru dealers, and some Cottman transmission shops (who stock it for their own use but won't sell it to end users.) Valvoline MaxLife ATF is said by Valvoline to substitute for Matic-J, but is not approved by Subaru or Nissan."
