im changing the transmission fluid in my volvo. the recommended lube is atf type f or g. my owners manual also says i could use 10w40 motor oil. but i was told on my volvo forum that i could use redline mtl. its a manual trans 4 speed with what they call a electrohydraulic overdrive. i think its weird that volvo recommends either type f or motor oil. i would think that motor oil would be to slippery for the overdrive and type f would not protect well. so i was thinking either redline mtl or amsoil supershift. what would be best in this situation?

That must be a very old car to have those requirements. I would use the Amsoil product look up guide on their website and see what they recommend and then go from there to choose a fluid whether it be Amsoil or another.

amsoil recommends supershift.
So go with their super-shift, or read the specs on it and find a brand that has the same spec's...
With a Synchromesh fluid you get the wear protection that ATF and motor oil don't provide for a manual transmission. And it's very close in viscosity to ATF. I'm using it in both my Ford ATF spec'd manual transmissions and it works much better than the ATF did.

well i guess i will try supershift. if the trans dont like it i will try MTL. just out of curosity how is redline MTL is it any good?
I think Pabs is right, it's too warm for the supershift where you're at, and you'd be better off with the MTF.
Or maybe it doesn't get that hot in St Pete's? All of us who don't live in Florida have the idea that it's smokin' hot everywhere down there

oh it gets hot everywhere in florida the last couple nights where in the 30s thats as cold as it gets but usually its in the 90s.

It's probably primarily about friction coefficient. One would generally expect that the older 'type F' and the engine oil formulations would have a higher static friction value than more modern fluids. There are published papers that show this but I won't refer them because I know that people get upset by me doing that.
