Flat earthers???

Apparently some flat earthers also believe the sun is really only 4000 miles above earth.
I'm no expert but i think Earth would be A BIT warmer if it really were only 4000 miles from earth.

What would you speculate the temperature of the earth to be if the sun were a mere 50 million miles from the earth instead of 93 million? Pure conjecture. Not picking on you, just thinking out loud. Maybe it wouldn't even matter if space is a total vacuum and that light energy doesn't have any losses until it hits our atmosphere.

I think that's how they explain satellites being in the thermosphere which they state as having a temperature higher than the melting points of the satellites that orbit there. They tell me there are so few particles of matter that the temperature is high in those few particles but not enough to actually be hot. I am genuinely curious about that.

You answered your own question about the satellites melting...it is near vacuum, but the few molecules that are there are very energetic, hence a high temperature. The molecules are so scarce that they cannot impart much heat energy to the satellites. Sort of like how it is much more efficient to heat something with water than air at the same temperature.

Actually, it does disappear over the horizon. After standing many dozens of topside conning watches in the Navy it's pretty clear that the driving factor to seeing the far away ship is your mast head height and your own height above the water line. At some point, they're no longer tall enough to be seen, under any magnification. If it were just optics, we could "see" those ships thousands of miles away across the flat ocean..and certainly would take advantage of that spy technology. Alas, we never have.

After punching holes in the oceans in subs for 10 yrs, we never once popped out of the side of the earth and fell into space...nor has any other sub that I'm aware of....lol. Where would they go? The only other option is that the earth is an infinite plane. Pretty cool concept since that would mean the moon is an infinite plane as well. Since we don't intersect with the moon's plane, the only option are 2 parallel infinite planes. Now my head hurts as we bring other planets and the sun into the discussion...........

The only proof i've ever needed to show me the earth is round, i got in the summer of 1989.
i was 9 years old.
We Flew to San Jose, California for mom's 25th HS Reunion. (She's not from Cali,one of her classmates was hosting, she went to a boarding school in northern India, Her parents were Missionaries.)

While out there, my parents didn't miss the opportunity to take their little one to beach.
first time i had seen the ocean.
standing there on that sand amongst the kelp piles, looking out over the water,(it was a remarkably calm day) I could clearly discern the (ever so slight) curve of the horizon. (and that was back when i still had 20/20 vision without lenses!)

69GTX - thank you for your service in the Navy. Regardless of flat or round, there is a limit to how far a person can see due to the atmosphere and various contaminants in the air. I would assume that situation would be exacerbated over the jostling waters of the ocean... waves, swells, water mist from movement and evaporation. I suspect that contamination may make the Horizon appear higher than it actually is by an amount substantial enough to make a difference ship-to-ship. Just a guess. Obviously your vantage point makes a difference also. The view from the deck of a carrier is going to be much different than from a canoe on the water.

Just like standing on railroad tracks or looking down a long straight highway with telephone poles. The tracks do not get increasingly close together or the telephone poles smaller, it is all a matter of perspective into a vanishing point.

I thanked him for his personal service. Military service requires many sacrifices. If I thank a very courteous worker at McDonald's for their service, that is not a blanket endorsement of the nutritious nature of McDonald's food.

I don't want to go there, but yes our government and probably military are responsible for some very questionable things. That doesn't mean the rank-and-file are in on the crimes.

If it is permissible for people to mock my God then I don't feel bad about questioning the altruistic nature of some people's God, NASA and the US government. There must be Faith involved because these people are swallowing everything they are told Hook Line & Sinker on faith, without even questioning what they are told.
