Flash Point vs Noack re intake deposits

But dealers use Syntec 5w-40, which is old. High Mg is the tell.

I'll take my chances with Edge and Ultra and even the Mobil 1 High Mileage. Seems like the best of all options. Decent additive levels in a modern formulation. Once an oil like Syntec 5w-40 makes approval, it gets locked into that formulation while lube tech is rapidly evolving.

That's how I see it. Expensive spec oil vs jug oil I already have.

It is $7/quart at the VW/Audi dealers, which is cheaper than any ordinary API or 502 synthetic at Autozone :-)

Is that the SLX OE LL03 or the SLX OE Prof? Just curious. In any case that's a great price.

anyone know if Terry has had any more to say about this recently? I miss his contributions to this board.

After careful study of the competing issues between 502 oils (and potential intake valve deposits) and 504 oils (and potential issues with U.S. fuel), I decided to use 504 oils (Castrol Edge Professional LL03) in my two Audi 2.0TFSI engines on a fixed 5K mile OCI.

I've done one UOA and seen one other from someone else doing the same thing, and the oil appears to hold up fine on this interval as far as TBN, which is the main concern with our fuel.
