Just did my 1st OC on my new mazda cx9, magnatec 5w20 motocraft fl400s filter. The stock mazda filter is marked fl400s but it's longer than the new fl400s. What's the difference?

They shortened the design a while back. Your car must have had an old fl400s on it.

Oh yeah. I forgot factory filters are from different supplier.

A lot of filters have been downsized over the years, the FL400 included. Not sure how much truth there is to it, but it has been reported that Ford downsized the FL400 filter so that an extra case of filters could be loaded into a semi-truck trailer before the contents would hit the interior roof.

Probably won't happen. The oil filter is more vital than the transmission filter, sine engines have a lot more dirt, blowby and combustion byproducts, etc. that are not present in transmissions.

Most transmission filters never need to be changed. OTOH, oil filters are replaced every year or more often than that. So they need to be made easier to replace.

Have you ever changed oil in an old VW bug?

Yep. Most "Transmission filters" are just strainers. Many can't even be replaced.

Trans filters catch metal, Dirt and clutch material they are pretty important also a spec of dirt can cause a trans to do bad things..Im not a trans guy but my brother which had a transmission shop for years says that all the time.

Where does this magical dirt come from? Clutch material stays in suspension.

.......except for when it doesnt. Lots of clutch material/dust falls to to the bottom of the pan.

The YF09-14-302A (FL400S), L321-14-302A 9U (FL-2017B), and LF05-14-302B (FL-910S) are Motorcraft. The engines they are used on are borrowed from Ford. There is another one that is a FL-1A, just never sell it so I don't have the number memorized.
