I just traded in my 2018 Mazda3 GT on a new CX30 (aero gray (new color) with light gray interior). I got a 2.5 NA hoping it gets a little better mpg than my CX5 Turbo. I will be doing a 1500 mile "feel good" oil change in the near future. The new car calls for the same Mazda filter as my old 3 used (1wpe-14-302). I initially started the 3 on Mazda filters and eventually changed to a Fram TG filter. The cost of Mazda filters kept going up more so than filters at walmart or even my local auto parts store. To add to that, Mazda has once again, changed the point of manufacturer from Japan, then Thailand, now to Taiwan (hopefully no quality change but may be too early to tell) and raising the price to now 12.95 at the dealer when I was getting them for 8.95 not long ago. I used to buy filters six at a time on line from Mazda dealers for even less, but those deals have dried up as have Mazda amazon and ebay filter deals. The new CX30 does have cylinder deactivation but thankfully no auto start stop feature. I will be doing a 5K oci on the new car. Is there any downside to just starting with a Fram TG or XG filter?

For my CX-5 and my Mazda 3 I bought a pack of the ROKI Japan Mazda filters. I also have a bunch of Premium Guard XL filters. If not going OEM, I spin on a Premium Guard in whatever flavor (Carquest, etc.) Hard to beat for price/performance. For crush washers, I got a pack of 20 on Amazon for like $4. They work fine.

If my Fords ever die, this may be my next vehicle. Is there any way to override the cylinder deactivation?
No way to do it as far as I'm aware. I actually read the owners manual nearly cover to cover hoping there was something in the in car/on screen "settings" or a "secrete switch" somewhere. Nothing found.

Been running 7317 in my current and old Mazda’s in warranty and out of warranty never a issue always replaced the 6607 with them.

Maybe ask your dealer to give you a discount.

My selling dealer sells me the filter for my CX-30 for $9.99 p/n 1WPY-14-302

That being said, I've never had an issue with the Fram 7317 in other Mazdas and Nissans I've owned.

When I was a technician, people would sometimes provide the oil and filter during and out of warranty. As long as there’s paper trail or digital, I don’t see an issue running a larger filter

The issue is not about running a larger oil filter, but who is going to cover any liability if it fails and takes out an engine? Using a larger oil filter in a non-cataloged application is grounds for warranty denial by the filter maker regardless of any technical details it "should" have held up regardless.
