Fixing up car for family member, but am I taking too long?

May I add my voice to those asking you for a list?
Since you're new to car stuff, how do you ascertain what's wrong?
Don't be embarrassed if you bit off more than you can chew.
Don't be embarrassed to report that kiddo got a car that's too far gone.

As asked above: Is everyone low on funds (it happens). Are you the only one with marketable talent? Is there any sharing of work or mutual saving of time and money or are you the "fountainhead of all worth"
If this approximates your situation, I respectfully suggest you all get the same car, preferably with the same powertrain.
This speeds things up and saves money. I also suggest scheduling maintenance.

You were not experienced to do repairs in a timely manner and maybe not great or inexperienced at conveying the time table?

4 months and wait is a long time to sink money into unless you are not able to drive.

Reminds me of when I help my HS friend illegally tow her free 1980 Saab 99 to High School auto shop for blown head gasket. They replaced it for $45 in parts but took 5 months!!! She was happy in the end getting running car for couple summers.
