The Mustang in the lower picture is a 1967/1968, NOT a 1970's Mustang!

I gotta agree, the 1970's Mustang II was NOT a macho car...BUT a 1971 Boss 429 or ever Boss 351 was.

....unless your standard for 'macho' is some mid-1970's guy with a 1978 King Cobra!!!

LOL!

Touche...

ok ok i looked up the word macho. it is". From Spanish macho (“male”), from Latin masculus ... macho" so it ONLY means "MAN" BUT each person uses it the way they want. BUT the U.S.A. has the FASTEST cars as far as accelerating, NOT top speed. you CANT fight that!!!!!

I've noticed the 308 is one of the favorite cars media/advertisers like to make comparisons with, especially acceleration, because it really wasn't as fast as people tend to assume. But it's fast enough.
I love them though, not that I've ever driven one but the 308/328 have an appeal that newer Ferraris don't. The feel, and the pure simplicity of an older car like that makes it feel more completely like it's *your* car, and that you're driving it, not a computer.
A little Ferrari probably isn't especially macho though, except for the self-maintenance aspect.

When I was younger my dad used to have a 427 Stingray, that was pretty close to being on this list (they listed the L88 though). Wicked car, I still remember the seat-pinning torque it had. Never got to drive it though.

If you had a Ferrari 308, you did not want to line up against a certain "Little Red..." Dodge pickup in the late '70s.

But if you really wanted to be quick in the '70s, you got a 4 cylinder:

Before the Z1, the CB750K was quick but motorcycles weren't considered faster than cars. The '73 Z1 would rip an SD455 Trans Am by nearly two seconds in the 1/4 mile.

Ever lose by two seconds? It's a considerable gap.

'74 was even worse for cars. By '75 the party was over for most cars. Z/28 was gone. Mustang got it's V8 back but might have actually been slower than the solid lifter German 60° 2.8 V6. It was the last year for the B-body Roadrunner before it became a sticker package on the Volare. If you had the money you could get a Porsche Turbo 930, but otherwise it was the big Kawi. All "macho" 4-cylinder in a flexi-flier pipe cleaner frame. The BMW R90S fought the Kawasaki hard and fought it well on tight tracks but the longer straightaways insured the Kwacker victories.

You do realize that the term "macho" itself is an imported term, don't you?!?!?!!

A Ferrari is certainly macho... and sexxxy.... and any other amazing adjective you can think of!

You don't become macho by writing a check. So why should you just be able to buy a macho car?

I have my doubts about how they perceive a lifted 4x4, or any sports car. But I bet a well used work truck gives them a good impression.

At 100 MPH you're talking 146 ft per sec, or loosing by nearly 300ft, almost shameful...

So that why all the gals are smilin' when I pull alongside in my beater '96 F150, I thought it was 'cause I'm good lookin'...

Not very popular?

I remember in old muscle-car conversations saying "Even Buick had one" and only some people could piece that together to the GNX. They probably had enough 442s (so-so muscle car?? 66 and 69 were WAY different, 69 fast-back SLOWER...) and GTOs to remember.

By the way... GTO or Charger?

Now, speaking of.. 1986 Grand National.

DID they have "Factory nitrous?" Rumors, some swear by it, and is probably why these cars can cost as much as new cars.....

I think I like it even better than the Knight Rider Trams Am (blacked out) car (!!)

Spazdog, at 100 mph the SD455 would give that kawaski (the Polish motorcycle company) a run!

Win, you're exactly right about the old gen hemi as delivered. They weren't nearly as fast as their reputation, and the variance between cars was HUGE. Some were quite quick and others were stones.

TechnoLoGs, there was no factory nitrous on a GNX, just a vastly under rated blown V6. No offense to those who like them but they handle like trucks and have poor brakes too as delivered. But it deserved to be on the list!

And not everyone buys a higher powered car as compensation. Some of us simply like going fast.

No vehicle sold by any of the major mfgrs had nitrous, period... I doubt any of the specialty builders did either as it illegal to use on the street in many states...

This thread has nothing to do with the driver being macho or not, it's all about the cars themselves!

My grandma can own a Hemi Cuda! She = not macho, Cuda = Macho
